Spoilers through Nanami’s fate in the Shibuya Incident. This is an editorial ranking, not an official list. Nanami’s best moments are not simply his cleanest wins: they reveal the care and responsibility beneath his tired, workmanlike exterior, especially in his relationship with Yuji.
How this ranking works
The order weighs character revelation, action, influence on Yuji, and emotional consequence. The official anime site’s character profile describes Nanami as a Grade 1 sorcerer who left corporate work before returning to sorcery. Official episode summaries establish several of the scenes below; the ranking and its interpretation are editorial judgment.

Nanami’s 15 best moments

His final handoff to Yuji
Nanami’s last words to Yuji turn a lifetime of professionalism into a painful act of trust. In an official interview, Japanese voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda discusses the line “あとは頼みます” (“I’ll leave the rest to you,” subject to the translation in the edition watched). Tsuda says he gave Nanami’s delivery a flicker of wavering: Nanami knows the request may weigh on Yuji like a curse, but still has to say it. The actor’s reading makes this moment more than a dramatic farewell; it is a responsibility Nanami knowingly passes on. (Official interview)
-
Recognizing Yuji as a sorcerer
Nanami’s recognition of Yuji matters because it is neither easy praise nor a denial of the danger ahead. Tsuda singles out the line “虎杖君はもう、呪術師なんですから” in the official interview. It means, in substance, that Yuji is already a jujutsu sorcerer; consult the licensed subtitles or dub for the exact English wording. Tsuda describes the line as carrying Nanami’s awareness that sorcerers may kill, lose people close to them, or die themselves. His respect for Yuji is inseparable from that sober knowledge. Continuing through Shibuya, despite exhaustion
Episode 42 describes Nanami as dazed and worn out, yet still exorcising transfigured humans. The scene strips away the composed routine that usually defines him: he is badly depleted, but continues to act because the crisis is still unfolding. It is a grim measure of his sense of duty, not a triumph over fatigue. (Official episode 42 summary)

Facing Mahito again in Shibuya
Episode 42’s official summary sets up Mahito’s appearance after Nanami’s exhausted fighting. Their reunion has force because the earlier encounter established Mahito as a threat Nanami could not simply put away. In Shibuya, the meeting arrives after Nanami has already been worn down by the surrounding violence, turning the confrontation into a cruel collision of old danger and new exhaustion. (Official episode 42 summary)
-
The quiet resolve beneath the crisis
Tsuda says he felt Nanami was internally very quiet amid Shibuya’s violent fighting, as though he had accepted his own end, while still conflicted about leaving Yuji with what came next. That is the actor’s interpretation, not a claim about authorial intent, but it captures the unusual composure of Nanami’s final stretch: calm does not mean that he is untouched by fear or concern. (Official interview)
-
Taking charge of the Shibuya barrier operation
In episode 35, Nanami directs Yuji, Megumi, and Ino toward the base of the barrier. The scene shows why his professionalism is useful to others: he can turn a chaotic situation into a practical objective and give younger sorcerers a clear next move. Leadership here is less about grand speeches than sound judgment under pressure. (Official episode 35 summary)

Saving Yuji from Mahito
Episode 13’s official summary states that Nanami prevents Mahito’s attack from landing on Yuji. It is an immediate, concrete expression of the protective instinct that sits beneath Nanami’s strict manner. He does not need to soften his standards to protect his junior; he acts when Yuji is in danger. (Official episode 13 summary)

Joining Yuji against Mahito
After the rescue, Nanami and Yuji combine their attacks in an attempt to exorcise Mahito, as episode 13’s summary records. The pairing works because their strengths and temperaments differ: Yuji brings force and urgency, while Nanami brings control and experience. For a brief stretch, their partnership feels like a lesson delivered through action rather than explanation. (Official episode 13 summary)

Breaking the waterway wall with Collapse
Nanami’s Ratio Technique becomes especially memorable when he uses its extension, Collapse, to break a waterway wall and bring down rubble. It turns a precise technique into a striking environmental attack: the surroundings themselves become part of his plan. Episode 11’s official summary documents the escalation and Collapse technique. (Official episode 11 summary)

Entering overtime against Mahito
Nanami’s release of his restriction and move into overtime is a sharp fit for a former office worker whose measured routine hides considerable capacity. Episode 11’s summary confirms the restriction release; the “overtime” framing belongs to the character’s work-life motif. The change gives the fight a satisfying shift in intensity without making Nanami’s power feel detached from his personality. (Official episode 11 summary)

His first major underground fight with Mahito
The underground confrontation is the point where Nanami’s calm professionalism meets an opponent whose threat is difficult to manage by ordinary force. Episode 10 sets up Nanami finding Mahito in the underground waterways, and episode 11 documents the fight’s escalation. The encounter makes his composure feel earned: he is assessing a dangerous opponent, not merely performing confidence. (Official episode 10 summary; Official episode 11 summary)

Finding Mahito in the underground waterways
Episode 10’s summary says Nanami finds Mahito in the underground waterways and faces him there. The location gives the pursuit an unsettling closeness, while Nanami’s willingness to follow the threat makes clear that his practical nature is not passivity. He goes where the danger is rather than waiting for someone else to handle it. (Official episode 10 summary)

Investigating the cinema incident with Yuji
Episode 9 pairs Nanami and Yuji at the movie-theater curse incident. It is an early example of their working relationship: Nanami’s experience shapes the investigation, while Yuji is learning how to operate as a sorcerer in situations where the human cost cannot be abstracted away. The case begins the progression from assignment to mentorship. (Official episode 9 summary)

Meeting the former salaryman behind the sorcerer
Nanami’s introduction establishes the contrast that defines him. The official character profile identifies him as a Grade 1 sorcerer who left corporate work and later returned to sorcery. His measured speech and practical attitude can read as exhaustion, but they also signal that he has chosen this dangerous work with an adult’s understanding of what it costs. Becoming the adult Yuji can rely on
Nanami’s arc is clearest when the smaller moments are viewed together: he works beside Yuji, protects him, recognizes him as a sorcerer, and ultimately entrusts him with what remains. This is an interpretive choice rather than one discrete scene, but it earns its place because it gives the other entries their emotional shape. Nanami’s care is rarely sentimental; it appears in the standards he sets and the responsibility he accepts.
Why Nanami’s best scenes are not only victories
Nanami is compelling because competence and care coexist with fatigue. His fights show a sorcerer who thinks tactically and uses his technique with purpose; his scenes with Yuji reveal what that discipline is for. The official episode summaries support the key encounters and turning points, while Tsuda’s interview offers one actor’s perspective on the emotional pressure behind Nanami’s final handoff. Neither establishes an official ranking, and the order here remains a judgment about which moments best reveal the character.
