Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava stars Vicky Kaushal, Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna. The film is based on Sambhaji, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, and depicts his capture and execution by the forces of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Scroll reported that it was released on February 14, 2025. What was reported before the Nagpur clashes?
Clashes began in Nagpur on March 17, hours after a protest demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb at Khuldabad. Reports described rumours that a cloth bearing the Islamic declaration of faith had been burnt. The precise account of that incident and responsibility for it were not established in the early reporting. The Indian Express reported Fadnavis’s account of the immediate context; the Associated Press noted that the tomb is about 500 kilometres (310 miles) from Nagpur. What did authorities report about injuries and the response?
Initial reports gave slightly different injury counts. News On AIR, reporting Fadnavis’s account on March 18, said 33 police personnel—including three deputy commissioners of police—and five civilians were injured; one civilian was in intensive care. The Associated Press reported at least 34 police personnel and five others injured that day. The figures should be understood as separate reports, not combined into a single confirmed total. News On AIR reported on March 18 that curfew covered areas under 11 police stations, five cases had been registered and five State Reserve Police Force battalions deployed. Its March 23 update said curfew had been lifted in all 11 areas, 104 people had been arrested and 13 FIRs registered. The available reporting supports a narrower conclusion: Fadnavis said the film had stirred anger against Aurangzeb, while reports situated the clashes after a protest and amid rumours about a burnt cloth. It does not establish that viewing Chhaava caused the clashes, that the violence was definitively premeditated, or what courts or later investigations ultimately found. The March 23 update reported an ongoing investigation, not a final case disposition.
