What happens in My Undesirable Friends: Part II – Exile?
The film continues the story of independent Russian journalists after they are forced to leave the country. From abroad, they try to keep reporting on the war and provide Russian audiences with an alternative to state propaganda, while outlets and colleagues rebuild their work across borders. The documentary also stays close to the personal consequences of displacement, including the strain of repeated moves and the ties of family, friendship and love.
The film’s official festival synopsis describes the journalists as facing state pressure and risk of prosecution at home, as well as threats abroad. How does Part II relate to the first film?
Part II continues My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow, picking up shortly after the earlier film ends. Viewers do not need to watch Part I first to follow Exile, according to the Associated Press interview with Loktev. [Associated Press]

How long is the film, and is there an intermission?
The runtime is 355 minutes—5 hours and 55 minutes. Film at Lincoln Center lists one 30-minute intermission for its NYFF presentation. The intermission information is specific to that presentation; check the details for any other screening. [Film at Lincoln Center]
The scale reflects the film’s extended view of time and daily life rather than a short overview of the subject. The Venice synopsis describes a four-year journey through a dozen countries. What kind of viewing experience should you expect?
This is an unusually long, observational documentary about people and their work over several years, not simply a compressed account of journalism or Russian politics. Loktev told the Associated Press that she thinks of it as “a hangout film” despite its length and subject. That framing may help viewers who assume a six-hour running time means an especially formal or relentlessly grim experience, but it does not shorten the commitment: allow nearly six hours, plus any venue-specific break. The Associated Press reported a limited U.S. theatrical opening on October 9, 2026. That does not establish nationwide or international availability. Check current local listings for screenings; schedules can change. No streaming date or availability in a particular country was confirmed in the available release information, so a home-viewing option should not be assumed.
