The leads
Sofia Carson as Anna
Carson plays Anna, an ambitious American from Queens who comes to Oxford to fulfill a childhood dream and study poetry. Anna arrives with a mapped-out future before meeting Jamie, making her encounter with him the film’s major disruption.
Carson also executive produces the film. Netflix Tudum quotes her explaining that she deliberately did not visit Oxford before filming: “I chose not to visit Oxford prior to filming,” she said, so that her first discovery of the city could happen on camera alongside Anna’s.
#1 Best Overall
Corey Mylchreest as Jamie
Mylchreest plays Jamie, an Oxford local who works as Anna’s teaching assistant. Their shared interest in poetry brings them together. Jamie is the son of William and Antonia Davenport, and his choices create tension within his family.
Director Iain Morris said the two leads “bounced off each other from the first moment they worked together,” adding that they clearly enjoyed trying to make each other laugh—and perhaps cry.
The supporting cast and characters
Dougray Scott as William Davenport
Scott plays William, Jamie’s father. William’s reaction to his son’s choices becomes a source of conflict between them.
Catherine McCormack as Antonia Davenport
McCormack plays Antonia, Jamie’s mother. Her approach to Jamie is gentler than William’s, giving the Davenport family dynamic a contrasting parental perspective.
