Alex Gibney’s Musk is most compelling not as a parade of revelations but as a distressing synthesis: a portrait of how Elon Musk’s business reach, public persona and political influence came to reinforce one another. Its scale is both an asset and a test of patience. The Guardian found the film absorbing and wide-ranging; TheWrap saw a deliberately punishing four-hour build. Whether that accumulation feels illuminating or exhausting may be the decisive question for viewers.
What Alex Gibney’s Musk is trying to explain
The film follows Musk from early Silicon Valley ventures through Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter/X, artificial intelligence and political activity. Rather than treating these as disconnected chapters, Gibney frames them as parts of a larger inquiry into 21st-century power: how technology, wealth, media visibility and political influence can converge around one person.
In an Associated Press interview in September 2026, Gibney described Musk’s power as rooted in his ability to speak confidently about the future in ways that persuade people to invest in his companies. That is the director’s interpretation of Musk’s appeal, not an independently established finding. Gibney also told the AP that he conceived the project as a portrait of power in this century, which helps explain why the film keeps widening its focus beyond business biography.
The documentary’s central question, as TheWrap quoted it, is how Musk assumed so much power—and why people gave it to him. The film’s answer is cumulative: it connects ambition, persuasive futurism, corporate scale and public influence rather than hinging on one definitive new disclosure.

Is it a bombshell documentary or a synthesis?
Mostly, it is a synthesis. The Washington Post describes the film as weaving familiar strands of Musk’s life and empire into a character study, rather than delivering a stream of explosive revelations. IndieWire’s available summary likewise emphasizes a damning, exhaustively researched portrait while noting limits to the filmmakers’ access.
That distinction matters to expectations. Viewers who already follow Musk’s companies and public controversies may recognize much of the terrain. Gibney’s value is in assembling those strands into a sustained argument about how power accumulates, and asking what that pattern means. The film can feel forceful through context and repetition even when an individual episode is not wholly new.
Who speaks for Musk—and who does not
Gibney interviewed family members, former friends and employees, journalists, and business associates, according to the Los Angeles Times. Musk himself did not participate. To address his absence, the filmmakers use a computer-generated avatar that speaks words taken from Musk’s interviews and public appearances.

The Atlantic clarifies that the avatar was computer-generated with human work involved, even though some coverage describes it as AI-generated. It is a conspicuous filmmaking device, not a substitute for an interview or an endorsement by Musk.

The film’s account therefore depends on the people who agreed to speak, public material featuring Musk, and the filmmakers’ interpretation of those sources. Gibney told The Atlantic he recruited independent fact-checkers to audit the production team’s research. That is a director-attributed description of the process; it does not independently verify every statement or settle contested claims shown in the film.
Does the nearly four-hour runtime earn its length?
The film is described as nearly four hours long by the Associated Press; Variety gives 3 hours 45 minutes for the version it covered. Listings and cuts can differ, so the exact figure depends on the version being discussed. Either way, this is an unusually long documentary and a substantial commitment.
Rank #3
Reviews diverge on whether that duration serves the material. The Guardian calls the film absorbing and wide-ranging, suggesting that its breadth sustains attention. TheWrap describes a punishing progression that takes time to reach its grim effect. Those responses point to a real trade-off: the accumulation can make Gibney’s thesis feel weighty, but the slow build may test viewers who want a tighter argument or more immediate discoveries.
A useful way to judge the pacing is to ask whether each new stretch deepens the connections among Musk’s ventures, influence and public role—or simply adds another example to a case you already understand. The film’s structure favors accumulation over brisk revelation.

Musk is strongest as a framework for considering how business power and political influence intersect. By moving among companies, media presence and politics, it asks viewers to see more than a succession of headlines. Its ambition is to make the broader pattern legible.
Rank #4
That broad argument is also where viewers may disagree. Whether the connections persuade will depend on how convincing the film’s sources and interpretation feel, particularly when it presents claims about a living person. Such claims should be understood as material advanced by the documentary or attributed reporting, not automatically treated as independently established fact.
The Washington Post reported that Musk’s attorney threatened a defamation suit over material in the film, including a text exchange presented in it. That is a reported legal threat: the available reporting does not establish that a lawsuit was filed or that a court ruled on the underlying claims. The threat, by itself, neither validates nor disproves the film’s account.

Watch Musk if you want a wide-angle, critical account that connects Musk’s rise to questions about wealth, technology and political power—and are willing to spend much of an evening with a deliberate, cumulative film. It is less suited to viewers seeking a compact biography or a succession of wholly unfamiliar bombshells.

Gibney’s documentary is best approached as an argument assembled from multiple voices and public material, not as a final adjudication of every disputed event. Its main payoff is the synthesis: a sustained attempt to explain how a figure’s influence grows and what conditions made that growth possible.
When and where can you watch Musk?
The Los Angeles Times reported that HBO had obtained television and streaming rights. The Atlantic reported that the network was expected to air the film in 2027, while noting uncertainty around future distribution support. That is a reported plan, not a confirmed release date or evidence that the film is currently available to stream or buy.
