Multicloud means using services from at least two cloud providers. Hybrid cloud means combining public-cloud resources with private infrastructure, such as an organization’s own data center. They describe different aspects of an architecture, so a business can be hybrid, multicloud, both, or neither.
What do the terms mean?
Multicloud: count the providers
Multicloud describes using services from two or more cloud service providers. The services might support different workloads, or a workload might depend on services from more than one provider. AWS and Google Cloud use this provider-count distinction in their definitions. AWS’s multicloud overview and Google Cloud’s architecture guidance explain the terminology.
Hybrid cloud: look at the private/public boundary
Hybrid cloud combines a private or on-premises environment with public-cloud resources. In its deployment-strategy definition, AWS specifies an organization’s own on-premises data center alongside at least one cloud provider. The key distinction is the connection between private infrastructure and public cloud, not the number of public providers. AWS Prescriptive Guidance sets out these deployment categories.
How are hybrid cloud and multicloud different?
| Decision point | Hybrid cloud | Multicloud |
|---|---|---|
| What defines it? | Private or on-premises infrastructure combined with public cloud. | Services from at least two cloud providers. |
| Question to ask | Which systems must remain private or on premises, and how will they connect securely and reliably to the cloud? | Which workloads need services from multiple providers, and which can remain with one? |
| Common reason to consider it | Retaining existing systems, local processing, low latency, continuity, staged migration, or data-residency needs. | Requirements or capabilities that one provider cannot adequately meet. |
| Main operating challenge | Integrating, securing, and managing systems across the private/public boundary. | Supporting additional provider-specific skills, tools, governance, and integration. |
These are architectural categories, not mutually exclusive alternatives. Google Cloud notes that terminology can vary across providers, so it is useful to state what an organization means by each term when discussing a design. Google Cloud’s guidance also describes the combined model.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can an organization use hybrid cloud and multicloud together?
Yes. A company might keep some systems in its own data center while using services from two public-cloud providers. That is commonly called hybrid multicloud: it has both the private/public boundary associated with hybrid cloud and the multiple-provider arrangement associated with multicloud.
For example, a business could retain a system on premises, use one provider for an application, and use another provider for a separate capability. The label alone does not say whether the systems are well integrated, resilient, or cost-effective; those outcomes depend on the actual design and operations.

When should a business consider hybrid cloud?
Hybrid can be worth evaluating when there is a concrete reason not to move every system into public cloud at once or to keep some processing local. AWS’s hybrid-cloud whitepaper, published November 5, 2020, identifies ongoing migration, disaster business continuity, low-latency applications, and international expansion among the use cases it discusses. Those are examples to assess, not proof that hybrid is automatically the right choice. Read the AWS whitepaper.
- Staged migration: Some workloads may need to remain on premises while others move, requiring a plan for connections and dependencies between environments.
- Local processing or latency: An application may need processing close to equipment, users, or data. Confirm the latency requirement and where the relevant components must run.
- Continuity: A hybrid design may form part of a continuity plan, but simply having both environments does not establish that recovery will work. Define dependencies and recovery procedures.
- Residency or local requirements: If data or processing must stay in a particular location, establish which requirements apply and whether the proposed placement satisfies them.
When should a business consider multicloud?
Multicloud is most defensible when a real technical or business requirement calls for capabilities or conditions that a single provider cannot adequately meet. AWS also discusses differentiated provider capabilities and data-sovereignty requirements as possible reasons. It cautions that each additional provider brings more people, skills, training, tools, and integration work. Its guidance is to reserve multicloud for workloads that cannot meet their requirements through one provider and to weigh the benefits against that added investment. - Name the requirement that requires another provider; avoid adopting one simply because multicloud is fashionable.
- Decide which workloads genuinely need cross-provider integration and which can remain separate.
- Account for provider-specific expertise, governance, security operations, and tooling.
- Plan how data and services will interoperate, including any movement between providers.
Using multiple providers does not automatically eliminate vendor lock-in or guarantee resilience. Those outcomes require deliberate architecture and operational planning; the number of providers by itself is not a guarantee.
How to choose between them
- Map the environments. List on-premises or private infrastructure and each public-cloud provider in use or under consideration.
- Apply the definitions. Private/on-premises plus public cloud indicates hybrid. Services from at least two providers indicate multicloud. Both conditions mean hybrid multicloud.
- Write down the driver. Identify the specific need—such as local processing, a staged migration, continuity, residency, or a provider capability—that shapes the architecture.
- Trace the connections. For hybrid, focus on secure, reliable links and dependencies across the private/public boundary. For multicloud, identify which services must interoperate across providers and which need not.
- Compare operating costs and complexity. Include skills, tools, governance, integration, and data movement, then decide whether the benefits justify them.
