It was not a hoax, a fan-made joke, or merely “closer than we thought.” Wizards of the Coast officially announced the Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration on March 24, 2025, and said the three limited-quantity drops would launch at 9 a.m. Pacific Time that day.
The meme-heavy release was Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants: Internet Sensation. It contained alternate-art versions of existing Magic: The Gathering cards—not a complete SpongeBob deck or a mechanically separate expansion. The wider collaboration also included a legendary-character drop and a set of underwater basic lands.
The SpongeBob Secret Lair is no longer an upcoming release
The original “closer than we thought” framing belongs to the period before Wizards of the Coast confirmed the crossover. That uncertainty ended on March 24, 2025, when Wizards announced the full SpongeBob Secret Lair lineup and its release timing.
The announcement said the Our Boss Is on Vacation Superdrop, including all three SpongeBob products, would go live at 9 a.m. Pacific Time on March 24, 2025. A Secret Lair support listing identifies the U.S. storefront date as March 25, 2025. Those references are best understood as a launch-time versus storefront-date-label difference, not as two separate releases.
All three products were described as limited-quantity Secret Lair drops and were available only while supplies lasted. As of August 12, 2026, the original release is more than a year in the past. Anyone looking to buy one now needs to distinguish historical direct-store pricing from current marketplace availability and resale pricing.

What was in Internet Sensation?
Internet Sensation was the meme-focused part of the collaboration. Wizards positioned SpongeBob as a natural fit for the product because the series has become a source of reaction GIFs, image macros, and widely reused internet images. Tyler Walpole was credited with the art.
Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants: Internet Sensation
- Counterspell
- Daze
- Inevitable Betrayal
- Force of Despair
- Night’s Whisper
- Food Token
Original announced price: $29.99 for the non-foil edition or $39.99 for the rainbow-foil edition.
The most immediately recognizable card was Counterspell, which received the “Mocking SpongeBob” meme treatment. That visual is the clearest expression of what this drop was trying to do: place familiar SpongeBob internet culture onto recognizable Magic cards.

These were not newly designed SpongeBob mechanics. Contemporary coverage described the cards as alternate-art or reskinned versions of existing Magic cards. Their rules functionality comes from the underlying Magic cards named above; the SpongeBob connection is expressed through the licensed art, presentation, and collectible crossover value.
The three SpongeBob products were not the same kind of drop
“The SpongeBob Secret Lair” can refer to the entire collaboration, but “meme-filled” most precisely describes Internet Sensation. The other two products had different purposes.
| Product | Focus | Contents | Original announced price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legends of Bikini Bottom | Legendary SpongeBob characters | Seven legendary-character treatments | $29.99 non-foil / $39.99 rainbow foil |
| Internet Sensation | Memes and viral SpongeBob imagery | Five spells and one Food Token | $29.99 non-foil / $39.99 rainbow foil |
| Lands Under the Sea | Underwater-themed basic lands | Ten basic lands: two each of Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest | $29.99 non-foil / $39.99 rainbow foil |
Legends of Bikini Bottom
Legends of Bikini Bottom featured seven character treatments. The listed SpongeBob characters and their underlying Magic cards were:
- Plankton — Skrelv, Defector Mite
- Mr. Krabs — Charix, the Raging Isle
- Squidward — Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar
- Gary — Toxrill, the Corrosive
- Sandy Cheeks — Toski, Bearer of Secrets
- Patrick Star — Barktooth Warbeard
- SpongeBob SquarePants — Jodah, the Unifier
The concept here was character reinterpretation rather than meme compilation. It should not be described as a separate SpongeBob Commander deck or as a new set of character-specific rules cards.

Lands Under the Sea
Lands Under the Sea contained ten basic lands, with two each of the five basic land types: Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. Its appeal was the underwater SpongeBob setting and the ability to use the lands in ordinary Magic decks.
Is this a SpongeBob expansion or a playable deck?
No. The SpongeBob collaboration was part of Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond crossover program, but these Secret Lair products were not a complete standalone SpongeBob expansion and Internet Sensation was not a ready-to-play deck.
Internet Sensation supplied a small group of individual cards and a Food Token. A player would still need a legal deck, additional cards, and the usual accessories to play a normal game of Magic. The cards can be used according to the rules of their underlying Magic versions, subject to the format’s legality rules and any later changes to those rules.
That distinction matters to two different audiences:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Collectors are primarily buying the licensed presentation, recognizable characters, meme references, and limited Secret Lair format.
- Players are buying alternate versions of cards they may already know or use, with the same underlying game function rather than SpongeBob-specific mechanics.
What did it originally cost?
Wizards announced the same original price for each of the three SpongeBob products: $29.99 for non-foil and $39.99 for rainbow foil.
Those figures are historical direct-store prices. They do not establish what a sealed product, individual card, or complete collaboration costs today. Limited-quantity Secret Lair products can change hands through secondary markets after their original sales window, and individual cards may not move in line with the price of a sealed drop.

The exact product phrase to look for is Magic: The Gathering SpongeBob Secret Lair. For the meme-focused product, use Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants: Internet Sensation. Marketplace availability and pricing should be checked live; the original announcement alone cannot confirm current stock or resale value.
How to protect or display the cards
These are ordinary Magic-sized trading cards, so general card-protection equipment is appropriate. A collector who intends to handle the cards regularly may want sleeves, a deck box, or a binder. Someone displaying the art may prefer a binder or other trading-card display system.
Look for card sleeves for Magic cards or a trading card binder rather than assuming that a SpongeBob-branded accessory was included. The Secret Lair products were card drops; generic Magic-compatible protection is the defensible accessory choice unless a specific licensed accessory is separately verified.
Why the crossover made sense
The pairing works because Magic and SpongeBob meet in two different kinds of nostalgia. Magic supplies established card names and recognizable gameplay objects. SpongeBob supplies characters, visual shorthand, and a large library of images already used in online reaction culture.
Internet Sensation leans into the second category. A card such as Counterspell is already familiar to Magic players, while the Mocking SpongeBob presentation gives it an immediately recognizable cultural identity outside the game. Legends of Bikini Bottom instead asks readers to identify characters, and Lands Under the Sea focuses on setting and atmosphere.

That division also explains why calling the entire collaboration “meme-filled” is slightly imprecise. The phrase is a strong description of Internet Sensation, but it obscures the character-driven and land-focused products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the release does—and does not—mean for collectors
The collaboration is a licensed physical collectible with crossover appeal, but its existence does not make it an automatic investment. A limited release can be desirable without guaranteeing appreciation, and the original price does not predict the current price of every card or sealed product.
Collectors should separate three questions:
- Do I like the art? This is the most reliable reason to buy a crossover collectible.
- Do I want the underlying cards? The cards are usable as Magic cards, but the value of that use depends on the individual card and the format in which it is played.
- Is the current price reasonable? That requires a live comparison of completed or current listings, condition, edition, and whether the item is sealed.
There is no basis here for promising a return, declaring a guaranteed sellout, or assigning a current resale price. Those claims require fresh marketplace evidence.
The short answer
The absurd-sounding SpongeBob Secret Lair became a real Magic: The Gathering release in March 2025. The meme product, Internet Sensation, included five existing Magic spells—Counterspell, Daze, Inevitable Betrayal, Force of Despair, and Night’s Whisper—plus a Food Token, all presented with SpongeBob-themed alternate art. It was sold alongside the seven-character Legends of Bikini Bottom and ten-land Lands Under the Sea drops.

The original announced direct-store prices were $29.99 for non-foil and $39.99 for rainbow foil per product. Current sealed-product and individual-card prices require a live retailer or secondary-market check and may differ substantially.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: MTG’s SpongeBob crossover was confirmed and released in March 2025. Internet Sensation is the meme-centered drop, while Legends of Bikini Bottom handles the characters and Lands Under the Sea supplies basic lands. The cards are alternate-art versions of existing Magic cards—not a full SpongeBob deck—and the original $29.99/$39.99 prices should not be mistaken for current market values.
