The better option depends first on where you watch. In the Knicks’ local market, NBA League Pass blacks out locally carried Knicks games live, so the MSG distribution route is the practical starting point. Outside that market, League Pass is designed for out-of-market games and is usually the better choice for a Knicks-focused viewer who also wants access to the rest of the NBA.
Neither service guarantees every Knicks game by itself. Nationally televised games follow separate rights rules, and MSG’s direct-to-consumer home is changing for the 2026–27 season. Use your location, the games you want live, and the current season’s distribution details to decide.
The short answer
| Your situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You live in the Knicks’ local market and want locally carried games live | MSG’s local distribution route | US League Pass blacks out local-team games live in-market. The 2025–26 schedule lists MSG and the Gotham Sports App unless a game is otherwise noted; DAZN is the announced direct-to-consumer home for MSG Networks in 2026–27. |
| You live outside the Knicks’ local market and mainly want Knicks games | NBA League Pass | League Pass is built around out-of-market live and on-demand games. You still need to check your own local-team blackout and each game’s national-broadcast status. |
| You want games from many teams, replays and condensed versions | NBA League Pass | The NBA lists hundreds of out-of-market games, full replays, condensed games and highlights, subject to regional and broadcast restrictions. |
| You want every nationally televised Knicks game live | The broadcaster listed for each game | Nationally broadcast games are unavailable live on US League Pass. The applicable network or streaming service carries those games instead. |
Why your location matters more than the brand name
League Pass rights are organized around market boundaries. The NBA Help Center’s League Pass Blackout Guide, updated October 6, 2026, says a local NBA team’s games are unavailable live on League Pass when you are inside that team’s US local market. For a viewer in the Knicks’ territory, buying League Pass does not turn it into a live local-TV replacement.
The blackout applies to the live feed, not necessarily to the eventual replay. The NBA guide says the replay of an in-market game becomes available three days after the live broadcast concludes. That delay makes League Pass a poor fit if your priority is watching a local Knicks game as it happens, but it can still be useful later for an archive, replay or condensed viewing.

Outside the Knicks’ market, the central League Pass restriction changes: the service is intended to deliver out-of-market games. A fan in another US city can therefore use League Pass for live Knicks games unless a separate national-broadcast rule applies. Your own local team may still be blacked out, so moving away from New York does not eliminate every blackout; it changes which team’s local rights affect you.
What counts as a local Knicks game
The word “local” refers to the NBA-defined regional territory, not simply whether you support the Knicks or once lived in New York. Eligibility is determined by where you are watching. A Knicks fan visiting or living within the team’s designated market should expect League Pass to apply the in-market blackout to locally carried games.
The exact territory should be confirmed against the current NBA blackout information and the local distributor’s eligibility check. Do not assume that a nearby state, a particular ZIP code or a pay-TV package has the same rights as New York City. The League Pass guide is the controlling reference for the service’s blackout behavior, while the local provider determines whether your address qualifies for its feed.
How MSG coverage works by season
2025–26: MSG and the Gotham Sports App
The official New York Knicks 2025–26 schedule states that all games are broadcast on MSG and the Gotham Sports App unless otherwise noted. That is a season-specific schedule note. It identifies the local route for games listed there, but it does not override national-broadcast rights or establish a permanent arrangement for later seasons.
For a 2025–26 viewer in the Knicks’ local market, this means the first check is the schedule’s broadcast designation. A game marked for MSG or the Gotham Sports App belongs to the local distribution path, while a game marked for a national network may require that network’s service. League Pass remains subject to its in-market blackout.
2026–27: DAZN is the announced direct-to-consumer home
On July 29, 2026, YES Network announced that DAZN would be the exclusive direct-to-consumer streaming home of YES and MSG Networks during the 2026–27 NBA and NHL seasons. The announcement says subscribers inside the respective regional coverage territories will have access to live Knicks games through that arrangement.
The same announcement says qualifying existing pay-TV subscribers will continue to receive applicable content on DAZN at no additional cost. MSG Networks’ fiscal-year 2026 SEC filing also described MSG+ as included in Gotham Sports and anticipated through DAZN for 2026–27.
Several purchase details were not stated in those announcements: the final standalone DAZN price for MSG access, the precise regional boundary and the complete terms for every existing pay-TV subscriber. Treat the relationship as announced distribution, not as a confirmed price or universal eligibility promise. Before subscribing for 2026–27, verify that the service is live in your area, that your address is inside the applicable MSG territory and that the published terms match your pay-TV status.

NBA materials describe League Pass as access to hundreds of out-of-market games live or on demand, together with full-game replays, condensed games and highlights. This makes it more than a single-team channel: it is a league-wide product for viewers who want Knicks games plus broader NBA coverage.
Feature availability can vary by region and device. The NBA League Pass FAQ says the standard plan supports one device at a time, while Premium supports up to three simultaneous devices. If several people in your household plan to watch different games at once, check the current plan terms before purchasing; the simultaneous-device limit is separate from the number of devices on which the app may be installed.

NBA lists Fire TV and Fire Stick among supported devices for the NBA app. A compatible streamer can put the app on a television, but hardware does not remove a blackout, change your market, or include a League Pass subscription. You still need an eligible account and a plan that covers the game you are trying to watch.
National broadcasts are a separate rights problem
A Knicks game can be unavailable live on League Pass even when you are outside the Knicks’ local market if it is nationally broadcast. The NBA’s US guide says nationally broadcast games are blacked out live on League Pass and directs viewers to the broadcaster carrying that game.
Recommended Free Tools
The guide lists ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock and Amazon Prime Video as examples of national broadcasters or platforms. The correct outlet can vary by game, so use the current Knicks schedule and the listing for that specific matchup rather than assuming one national subscription covers the entire season.
Replay timing is different from local blackouts. The NBA guide says a nationally broadcast game’s League Pass replay becomes available at 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time the following day. If you only need an on-demand replay, that timing may be acceptable; if you need to watch live, plan on the named national service.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | MSG local route | NBA League Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Primary audience | Fans inside the Knicks’ regional market seeking locally carried games | Fans outside the relevant local market, plus viewers seeking broad NBA coverage |
| Live local Knicks games | Designed to carry locally distributed games, subject to the schedule and territory | Unavailable live in the Knicks’ US local market |
| Out-of-market Knicks games | Regional eligibility applies; the local feed is not a nationwide product | Core use case, except when a game is subject to a local or national blackout |
| Nationally televised Knicks games | Check the national rights listing; MSG is not automatically the carrier | Unavailable live on US League Pass; use the named national broadcaster |
| League-wide access | Focused on MSG programming and its regional teams | Hundreds of out-of-market games, replays, condensed games and highlights |
| Simultaneous viewing | Terms depend on the current MSG/DAZN or pay-TV product | NBA says one device for standard and up to three for Premium |
| 2025–26 local distribution note | Knicks schedule lists MSG and Gotham Sports App unless otherwise noted | Blackout rules apply regardless of the local schedule listing |
| 2026–27 direct-to-consumer note | DAZN announced as exclusive direct-to-consumer home for MSG Networks; price and exact boundary not stated | NBA blackout and national-rights rules continue to govern access |
Choose MSG if you are an in-market fan
MSG is the logical first stop when your address is inside the Knicks’ local territory and your priority is a locally carried game live. In that situation, League Pass cannot substitute for the local feed because the NBA blocks it during the live event.
Start with the schedule for the season you are watching. For 2025–26, look for MSG or Gotham Sports App designations and note any “unless otherwise noted” exceptions. For 2026–27, check the current MSG Networks and DAZN terms before paying: the relationship has been announced, but the final standalone price and exact geographic eligibility were not specified in the July announcement.
If you already receive qualifying MSG content through a pay-TV provider, check whether the announced 2026–27 arrangement includes your subscription at no additional cost. That benefit is described for qualifying existing subscribers, not as a blanket promise to every pay-TV customer.
Choose League Pass if you are out of market
For a Knicks fan outside the team’s local market, League Pass is usually the more useful base subscription. Its product is specifically built for out-of-market live games, and it adds replays, condensed games and highlights when you cannot watch the full broadcast.
Check two items before purchase. First, confirm that the address where you will watch is not inside the Knicks’ local blackout territory. Second, scan the schedule for national broadcasts. A game can be out of market and still unavailable live on League Pass because a national network owns that live window.
League Pass is particularly strong for fans who follow more than New York. You can use the same service for other out-of-market matchups, then return to Knicks replays or condensed versions. If you only want a handful of games, compare the current single-game options before committing to a season plan.

Single-game viewing and current price context
The NBA’s 2025–26 viewing guide lists a US full-game purchase at $6.99. It also lists quarter-based options of $4.99, $2.99 and $0.99. These are single-game prices from that season’s guide, not annual or monthly League Pass subscription prices, and they may change by season or market.
Single-game purchases can make sense when you are testing availability, watching one matchup from outside the market or avoiding a subscription for a short visit. They do not override local or national blackouts. Before paying, confirm that the game is eligible for live purchase in your location and identify whether the listing is a full game or a quarter option.
A five-minute decision process
- Identify the viewing address. Use the location where you will watch, not your billing address or favorite team, to determine whether the Knicks are local.
- Check the season. A 2025–26 schedule note about MSG and Gotham Sports App does not automatically describe 2026–27 distribution.
- Read the game listing. Mark each matchup as local, out of market or nationally broadcast. National listings require the named broadcaster for live viewing.
- Match the service to the priority. Select MSG’s local route for live in-market coverage; select League Pass for out-of-market access and broader NBA features.
- Verify the account and device. Confirm regional eligibility, current plan terms and app support on your television or streaming device. Fire TV and Fire Stick are listed as NBA app options, but they do not include a subscription.
- Price the exceptions. If you only need one or two games, review the current single-game price. If you are buying for 2026–27 in the MSG territory, wait for the published DAZN price and terms before treating the announcement as a completed purchase offer.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming League Pass means every Knicks game
League Pass is not an all-rights pass. Local games are blacked out live in the local market, and national games are blacked out live across the US. Build your plan around those two rules instead of the team name on the subscription.
Using a 2025–26 distribution note for 2026–27
The Knicks’ 2025–26 schedule identifies MSG and Gotham Sports App unless otherwise noted. The later announcement names DAZN as the 2026–27 direct-to-consumer home for MSG Networks. Keep the seasons separate and check the current schedule and terms.
Confusing a device with a viewing right
Installing the NBA app on Fire TV or another supported device only provides a way to display the service. It does not grant League Pass access or change a blackout.
Buying before checking national coverage
If the schedule assigns a game to ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video or another national outlet, League Pass will not provide that game live in the US. Identify the broadcaster first.
Treating an announced price as confirmed
The 2025–26 single-game figures are dated guide prices. The 2026–27 DAZN announcement did not state a standalone MSG price. Do not carry either figure into a new season without checking the current purchase page.
What each service is best at
MSG’s advantage
- Live access to locally carried Knicks games for eligible viewers inside the regional market.
- A local-team focus rather than a league-wide menu.
- Potential continuity for qualifying existing pay-TV customers under the announced 2026–27 DAZN arrangement.
League Pass’s advantage
- Out-of-market Knicks games as the core product.
- Broader access to other NBA teams.
- Full replays, condensed games and highlights for flexible viewing.
- Different simultaneous-device limits by tier: one for standard and up to three for Premium, according to the NBA FAQ.
Bottom line for Knicks fans
Choose based on geography, not loyalty alone. A fan in the Knicks’ local market should start with the MSG route because League Pass blacks out local games live. A fan outside the market should start with League Pass, then account for national broadcasts and any local blackout tied to the viewer’s own team.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For the 2025–26 season, the Knicks schedule points local viewers to MSG and the Gotham Sports App unless a game is otherwise noted. For 2026–27, DAZN is the announced direct-to-consumer home of MSG Networks, but its standalone price, exact regional boundaries and final subscriber terms still need to be confirmed when published. In every season, check the individual game listing: rights and location determine whether you can watch live.
