MrBeast’s “send your photo to the Moon” promotion was a real, limited campaign announced in January 2021—but it was not a service that printed or displayed photographs on the lunar surface. Buyers paid to have a photo or approximately one-second video included in a proposed digital time capsule intended to travel on lunar hardware.
Later reports associated the project with Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission One. NASA records that mission as launching on January 8, 2024, but failing to land on the Moon. As a result, “your photo is on the Moon” is not a supportable description of the final outcome. No verified MrBeast submission route is currently active in 2026.
What was MrBeast’s Moon project?
The promotion presented itself as a digital time capsule. According to contemporary reporting, fans could purchase a submission slot through MrBeast’s online store and upload a personal image or very short video. The files were reportedly intended to be copied onto a “moon-ready” storage device that would travel with a lunar spacecraft.

That distinction matters. The plan was not to send a physical photograph through space, beam a message directly to the lunar surface, or engrave an image into the Moon. It was a proposal to carry digital files as part of a spacecraft payload.

The original announcement and instructions were reported by TechTimes in January 2021.
What could buyers submit?
The reported promotion accepted:
- A photograph.
- A video of approximately one second.
- Content that was legal and suitable for inclusion in the project.
Examples mentioned in the contemporary coverage included family photographs, pet pictures, memes and celebrity images. Those were the rules described for the 2021 campaign, not current submission requirements.
How much did it cost?

Was this a NASA project?
The original coverage described the destination generally as a NASA rover, but it did not identify a spacecraft, provide a NASA payload document, or establish that NASA operated or endorsed the MrBeast sales campaign.
NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program uses private companies to deliver NASA and other payloads to the Moon. A private promotion can potentially travel on commercial lunar-transport capacity without being a NASA-sponsored consumer product. Therefore, it is more accurate to say that the promotion was described as using space associated with a NASA-linked lunar mission—not that NASA partnered with MrBeast on the campaign.

Which mission was supposed to carry the files?
The original January 2021 report did not name the spacecraft. Later community discussions associated the project with Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission One, but the available evidence does not fully establish the contractual relationship between the MrBeast promotion, its storage device and that mission.
That identification should therefore be presented as reported rather than conclusive unless supported by a first-party payload manifest, archived product page, customer communication or other direct documentation.

What happened to Peregrine Mission One?
NASA’s current lunar-mission record lists the following facts:
- Launch: January 8, 2024.
- Operator: Astrobotic, United States.
- Program context: The first launch under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program.
- Outcome: Unsuccessful, with no lunar landing.
This also explains why the 2021 promotion and the eventual mission should not be conflated. The original announcement reportedly suggested a mission later that year, but the lunar mission later associated with the project launched in 2024.

There is no confirmed evidence that the customers’ files reached the lunar surface.

- A customer submits a file through a website.
- The organizer stores or copies the file.
- The file is placed on a spacecraft or payload.
- The spacecraft launches toward the Moon.
- The spacecraft reaches lunar orbit or the vicinity of the Moon.
- The payload lands on the lunar surface.
Even if the first three steps occurred, they would not prove the sixth. NASA’s record of Peregrine Mission One says the mission did not complete a lunar landing. Accordingly, the defensible conclusion is that the project did not deliver the photos to the Moon’s surface on that mission.
The status of individual customer files is a separate question. The available material does not establish whether every purchased file was collected, whether every file was copied to the payload, whether backups existed, or whether customers received refunds or replacement arrangements.
Does the failed landing mean the promotion was a scam?
Not automatically. A failed lunar mission does not, by itself, prove that a promotion was fraudulent. Possible explanations include mission failure after payload integration, incomplete payload integration, a change in mission arrangements, or terms that did not guarantee lunar delivery after a launch or landing failure.
Those questions require the original terms of sale, customer notices and first-party statements. A buyer’s merchandise, certificate, submission record and actual payload inclusion should also be treated as separate matters.

What should former buyers check?
Anyone who purchased a submission should look for:
- The original order confirmation and payment record.
- The exact wording on the certificate.
- The campaign’s archived terms of sale.
- Any email about delays, mission changes, refunds or cancellations.
- Evidence that the uploaded file was accepted rather than merely that a package was purchased.
- Any first-party statement identifying the spacecraft or explaining the mission outcome.
Do not assume that merchandise fulfillment proves lunar delivery. A T-shirt or hoodie could have been fulfilled independently of the spacecraft payload.
Can you still send a photo through MrBeast in 2026?
No verified active MrBeast Moon-message signup page has been identified for 2026. The available instructions concern the limited January 2021 promotion, whose reported prices and upload process are historical.
The current MrBeast merchandise store should not be assumed to preserve old customer files, handle claims related to the project or offer new lunar submissions. Likewise, Astrobotic should not be treated as a place to purchase or retrieve a MrBeast submission without a specific, first-party customer-support or payload page.
Be especially cautious of any unofficial page asking for payment or personal images while using the old $10 offer. Do not upload files to a purported reopening unless the offer is confirmed through a verified official source.
The bottom line
MrBeast’s 2021 promotion sold participation in a proposed lunar digital time capsule: a photo or very short video intended to travel on a spacecraft, with higher-priced packages including merchandise and a reported certificate. Later reports linked it to Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission One, but that identification is not fully confirmed by the primary sources available here.
NASA records Peregrine Mission One as unsuccessful, with no lunar landing. The promotion therefore should be described as an intended lunar payload—not as proof that buyers’ images are now stored on the Moon. The original offer is not a verified active service in 2026.
