In October 2025, Jimmy Donaldson—better known as MrBeast—warned that increasingly realistic AI video could put the livelihoods of millions of creators under pressure. Speaking shortly after OpenAI announced Sora 2, he described the moment as “scary times.” His comment was a warning about competition, trust and the economics of online video—not a prediction that human creators would disappear overnight.
What MrBeast actually warned about
MrBeast was reacting to the possibility that AI-generated videos could become comparable to conventionally produced videos. His concern extended beyond celebrity channels to the “millions of creators currently making content for a living.” The implication was that, if synthetic video became cheap, fast and abundant, the value of producing ordinary content could fall.
The remarks were reported by TechCrunch in October 2025. They should not be inflated into a claim that AI will destroy YouTube or eliminate every creator. Donaldson identified a possible economic shock; he did not provide a verified forecast of job losses or falling creator income.
Why Sora 2 made the warning feel immediate
OpenAI announced Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, presenting it as a video-and-audio generation model with improved realism, physics, steerability, synchronized dialogue and sound effects. The launch also included a social-video experience built around user-created characters, including representations of users’ likenesses. OpenAI described those capabilities in its launch announcement.

That combination mattered. AI video was no longer being discussed only as a specialist production experiment; it was being presented as something people could create and share in a social-feed environment. OpenAI’s system card also acknowledged risks involving misleading generations and nonconsensual use of likeness, while describing safeguards such as prompt and output blocking and restrictions involving photorealistic people and minors.
There is an important present-day qualification. OpenAI’s system-card page says the Sora product was no longer available as of April 26, 2026. Sora 2 remains relevant to the 2025 news event, but it should not be described as an available product today.
The economic mechanisms behind the fear
A sudden increase in supply
If generating acceptable video becomes inexpensive and quick, the number of competing uploads can rise sharply. More supply does not automatically create more viewers. It can make discovery harder for everyone, including people who still shoot and edit their own work.
Lower costs and higher expectations
Brands and channels may expect more videos for the same budget when routine production tasks become automated. That can reduce demand for some editing, design, voice, translation and production-assistant work even when the on-screen creator remains in place.

Commoditization of repeatable formats
Narrated explainers, list videos, generic short clips, reaction compilations and other formulaic formats are easier to reproduce than reporting built on access, distinctive expertise or a recognizable personality. The risk is not that every format becomes worthless, but that the most interchangeable work faces the strongest price pressure.
Trust and impersonation
Realistic synthetic video can make viewers less certain that a person, event or endorsement is authentic. A cloned face or voice can compete with a creator’s own work, mislead an audience or damage a reputation. YouTube has also been working on likeness-detection technology, according to TechCrunch, but detection and takedown systems do not remove the underlying consent and fraud problems.
Not all AI video is the same

Calling all of these practices “AI content” hides the important distinction between assistance and substitution. A captioning tool and a channel that mass-produces synthetic presenters may use related technology, but they change labor and audience expectations in very different ways.
How YouTube’s own AI adoption fits
The 2025 coverage described YouTube experimenting with creator-oriented AI features, including animating still images, applying styles, generating clips or highlights from livestreams and podcasts, and answering questions inside YouTube Studio. Feature names, eligibility and geographic availability can change, so those examples should be treated as period-specific rather than a current universal menu. YouTube’s use of AI does not mean the platform endorses fully automated, low-effort channels. A production aid can help a creator make a better video; mass-produced material that offers little original value is a different editorial and audience problem.
MrBeast’s complicated relationship with AI
The warning also attracted attention because Donaldson had participated in AI-related creator products. During 2025, Viewstats promoted an AI-powered thumbnail feature that drew criticism from creators who feared imitation of existing thumbnail styles or displacement of human designers. Reporting said the feature was removed and that Viewstats would instead connect creators with human thumbnail artists. The episode was covered by TechCrunch; a Sad Boyz transcript provides secondary discussion, not definitive technical evidence about training or copying.
That history makes “MrBeast is anti-AI” an inaccurate summary. A more defensible interpretation is that his position is pragmatic: AI can be useful, but deployment becomes contentious when it appropriates creative work, weakens consent or substitutes for labor without a clear value to audiences. That is an interpretation of the events, not a formal statement of his philosophy.
His scale helps explain why the warning carried unusual weight. TechCrunch reported that Forbes’ 2025 creator ranking estimated Donaldson’s earnings at $85 million and his following at 634 million. Those are dated Forbes estimates, not independently audited figures, but they underscore that a highly successful creator was acknowledging risks to the ecosystem that enabled his business.

The case for optimism
Instagram head Adam Mosseri offered a competing interpretation in October 2025. As reported by TechCrunch, he argued that AI could let people who previously lacked the ability to produce content create work at a certain level and scale. He also acknowledged that bad actors could misuse it and that audiences—especially children—would need to become more skeptical of what they see.
That optimistic case has substance:
- Small channels may gain access to editing, design, translation and animation that once required a team.
- Creators can prototype ideas and visual styles more quickly.
- Accessibility features can help people publish across languages or with disabilities.
- Automation can remove repetitive tasks without removing a creator-led business.
- More participants can mean more experimentation and a wider range of subjects.
More creators, however, does not prove that existing livelihoods are safe. Audience attention is finite, and abundant output can increase the value of trust, taste and community even as it lowers the cost of making a file called a video.
What AI still does not automatically provide
Lower production cost is not the same as a distinctive idea, credible reporting, compelling performance or a loyal audience. Human advantages may include access to people and places, editorial judgment, relationships, live interaction, personal accountability and a recognizable point of view. AI can imitate surface style without supplying those underlying assets.
The practical question for a creator is therefore not whether to use AI in the abstract. It is whether a particular use improves the finished work or merely increases the volume of interchangeable content.
Practical steps for creators
- Build a recognizable identity. Develop a point of view, expertise, voice or on-camera presence that is difficult to substitute with a generic prompt.
- Automate repetitive work selectively. Use tools for rough cuts, captions, clipping or translation, while retaining human control over claims, pacing and final edits.
- Protect original assets. Keep project files, raw footage, scripts, thumbnails, contracts and brand materials so ownership and provenance are easier to establish.
- Disclose meaningful synthetic elements. Be clear about synthetic voices, likenesses or substantially generated footage when disclosure is relevant to audience trust or platform rules.
- Monitor impersonation. Watch for unauthorized uses of your face, voice and branding, and document examples before seeking platform or legal remedies.
- Diversify distribution. Do not make one AI vendor or one recommendation algorithm the sole foundation of the business.
- Judge tools by outcomes. Measure whether a workflow improves retention, quality, accessibility or audience value—not only whether it reduces cost.
What “scary times” means now
MrBeast’s phrase is best understood as a warning about bargaining power and trust. AI may expand participation and help small teams produce more, while also flooding feeds, compressing rates for routine work and making authentic identity harder to verify. The evidence supports those mechanisms and competing interpretations; it does not support a settled claim that AI has already caused a measurable collapse in YouTube creator income.
The Sora product’s later discontinuation also shows why launch headlines should not be treated as permanent market facts. The broader issue survives a single product: who controls synthetic production, who is paid when creative labor is automated, and how audiences distinguish a creator’s work from an imitation.
