It became more than a gag: the puppet captured a turning point for Mick Foley’s Mankind, whose character was moving from grim brutality toward humor and vulnerability.
How did Mr. Socko start?
WWE dates Mr. Socko’s on-screen introduction to an October 1998 episode of Raw. In the storyline, Mankind visited a hospitalized Vince McMahon with clowns and balloons, then entertained him with a sock puppet. WWE’s recap describes it as an impromptu creation that became Mr. Socko: WWE’s account of the segment.
That establishes how the puppet entered the story, but not who physically made the first sock puppet or how the idea was developed backstage. The available official accounts do not settle that creator question, so the on-screen scene is the clearest documented origin.
Why did Mankind carry a sock puppet?
The puppet made sense because Mankind was changing. WWE’s biography of Foley describes a character who, after the dangerous Hell in a Cell match, relied less on his pain threshold and more on humor, intelligence and vulnerability. The sock stood in sharp contrast to the barbed-wire-wrapped 2-by-4 associated with his earlier presentation.

Foley later described the shift as a deliberate choice: “I made a conscious decision to make my character more lighthearted, which turned out to be the best thing I could have done.” He made the comment in WWE’s oral history of the 1998 Hell in a Cell match, published June 25, 2013: WWE oral history.
Mr. Socko did not erase Mankind’s darker edge; it gave the character another register. Foley’s three WWE personas—Cactus Jack, Dude Love and Mankind—each had a distinct presentation, and Socko became a compact expression of the comic side Mankind could now show.

WWE’s retrospective on the Rock ’n’ Sock Connection highlights the pair’s comedic chemistry, including the Raw “This Is Your Life” segment Mankind staged for his partner. WWE calls the segment highly rated but does not provide an audience figure in the cited account, so no exact rating or viewership number can be established here.
The comedy was part of a partnership that also delivered championship success: Foley and The Rock later won WWE Tag Team titles. Socko fit naturally into a pairing built around the contrast between Mankind’s eccentric warmth and The Rock’s larger-than-life persona.

What Mr. Socko represented in Foley’s career
Mr. Socko’s staying power comes from what it condensed into one simple prop: a change in tone without abandoning the character’s history. For fans, it was a comic visual that could puncture tension; for Mankind, it marked room for playfulness after a period defined by pain and danger.
WWE’s biography identifies Foley’s autobiography as Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks, a companion account of his career. WWE describes the book as a New York Times bestseller; that designation does not establish its current retail availability.
