Mouthwashing is a story-focused, first-person horror game about five crew members stranded aboard a space freighter. Its appeal is its bleak premise and psychological-horror framing; its most important drawback for some players is an explicit content warning for extreme violence, gore, and mutilation. Steam player reviews are strongly positive in the latest available snapshot, though those ratings change over time.
What is Mouthwashing about?
Developed by Wrong Organ and published by CRITICAL REFLEX, Mouthwashing follows the five-person crew of the Tulpar after the freighter is stranded in space. Food is running low, isolation is setting in, and tension grows among the crew. Steam describes it as a first-person horror game about the dying crew of a shipwrecked space freighter. Steam’s game page lists its release date as September 26, 2024.
The setup is best approached without major plot details: the game foregrounds a confined survival situation and the crew’s conflicts. Its official description characterizes the scares as psychological and emphasizes immersive storytelling that rewards paying attention to the surroundings.
What kind of horror and gameplay should you expect?
Story and atmosphere first
The store-page framing points to psychological, story-led horror rather than an action-heavy combat game. Environmental attention is part of how the experience is presented, so players who enjoy piecing together a narrative from what they observe may find that approach appealing. The available official information does not establish puzzle difficulty, playtime, or how consistently the pacing works, so those details should not be treated as settled review consensus.

A deliberately bleak situation
Isolation, dwindling supplies, and crew conflict give the premise a grim survival-horror tone. That may suit players looking for an unsettling narrative, but it is not a light or broadly family-friendly horror recommendation.
Is Mouthwashing too disturbing for you?
Steam’s developer-provided content disclosure explicitly names “Extreme violence, gore, mutilation and worse on PSX-style characters.” If graphic violence or mutilation is a hard limit for you, take that warning seriously before playing. The stylized presentation does not negate the stated content. The available disclosure does not provide a scene-by-scene breakdown.
