Mr. Deepfakes, widely described as one of the largest sites devoted to nonconsensual deepfake pornography, announced in May 2025 that it was shutting down permanently. Its notice blamed the loss of a critical service provider and resulting data loss. That is a significant disruption to a prominent hub—but it does not establish that copies elsewhere disappeared, or that the broader abuse has stopped.
What was Mr. Deepfakes?
Mr. Deepfakes was a prominent online destination for sexual images and videos that used a person’s face or likeness in explicit material without that person’s consent. Reporting described it as a leading site in this category, though “largest” is not a precise, independently audited ranking.
“Deepfake porn” is common shorthand, but the harm is more clearly described as nonconsensual intimate imagery involving digital forgeries. That distinguishes manipulated sexual depictions from authentic intimate images shared without permission, and from consensual adult pornography or lawful synthetic media. Consent to one image, video, or public persona does not amount to consent to a sexual manipulation.
Reporting traced the site’s rise in part to Reddit’s 2018 ban on deepfake pornography, after which Mr. Deepfakes became a destination for users displaced by that policy. Contemporaneous reporting on the shutdown describes that history and the site’s role.

What happened, and what did the site say?
- 2017: Face-swapping techniques began attracting broad public attention as manipulated videos spread online.
- 2018: Reddit formally banned deepfake pornography.
- May 5, 2025: Reporting found Mr. Deepfakes offline and described its shutdown notice.
- May 19, 2025: The TAKE IT DOWN Act became federal law.
The notice said a “critical service provider” had permanently terminated service and that data loss made continued operation impossible. It also said the site would not relaunch, warned that purported replacements claiming to be official should be treated as fake, and said the domain would eventually expire. Those are statements by the former site, not independent proof that every associated system or copy vanished.
Who shut it down?
The provider was not identified in the available contemporaneous reporting. The notice does not establish whether it was a web host, storage company, content-delivery service, domain-related provider, payment processor, security service, or another vendor. Nor does the reporting establish that a court or government agency ordered or carried out the shutdown.

The timing makes the TAKE IT DOWN Act relevant context, but not a proven cause. The House passed the bill on April 28, 2025; Mr. Deepfakes was reported offline on May 5; and President Donald Trump signed the act on May 19. The site’s stated explanation was provider termination and data loss—not the law. Congress’s legislative action record documents the bill’s progress.
What the TAKE IT DOWN Act does—and what it does not
Enacted as Public Law 119-12 on May 19, 2025, the TAKE IT DOWN Act criminalizes certain intentional disclosures of nonconsensual intimate visual depictions. Its coverage includes both authentic intimate images and qualifying AI-generated “digital forgeries.” The law defines a digital forgery as an intimate depiction of an identifiable person created or altered using software, machine learning, AI, or other technology that a reasonable person would find indistinguishable from an authentic depiction when viewed as a whole. The statutory text sets out the definition, offense, and platform provisions.

The act also requires covered platforms, as defined in the statute, to establish a notice-and-removal process for covered material. It is not a rule that every AI-generated sexual image is automatically illegal, nor does a removal process guarantee that all copies, references, or search results disappear immediately. The statute’s conditions include questions of consent, identifiability, privacy expectations, public concern, intent, and harm. Congressional Research Service analysis discusses the law’s scope and potential First Amendment and Section 230 questions.
Those questions matter in practice. Statutory conditions and exceptions mean the law is not a blanket ban on all manipulated imagery, satire, or reporting. Notice systems can also generate disputes about identity, authenticity, context, or lawful expression; legal interpretation and enforcement will shape how the provisions operate.

Why closing a hub is not the same as erasing the material
Taking a site offline can remove a central index, account pages, or files hosted there, and can make material harder for casual users to find. It can also disrupt a community that shared content, links, or techniques. But users may already have downloaded or copied material, reposted it to other services, or altered it again. Private groups, file lockers, torrents, and successor domains can outlast a public site.
The generation tools and distribution infrastructure are separate from any one website. Closing a hub does not by itself eliminate the tools used to create images, or the hosting, advertising, payment, and referral systems that can support a wider ecosystem. The result is best understood as infrastructure disruption—not a solution to image-based sexual abuse.

What remains unknown
- The provider’s identity and role: The shutdown notice did not name the critical service provider.
- The precise cause: Public reporting does not show whether the termination followed a policy decision, legal action, law-enforcement involvement, or another reason.
- The fate of the site’s data: The operator said data loss made a relaunch impossible, but that does not independently establish what data was destroyed, retained, or accessible elsewhere.
- Later infrastructure: The shutdown announcement establishes what was reported in May 2025, not the status of every related domain, archive, mirror, or successor community afterward.
- Responsibility for the operation: Claims about an individual’s identity or role should not be treated as established fact without a reliable original investigation or a court finding.
After a domain announces closure, impersonators can exploit its name to distribute malware, solicit money, or target victims. Do not assume a site claiming to be an official replacement is legitimate, and do not amplify abusive material by sharing links, screenshots, names, or search terms.
What the shutdown means for people depicted without consent
The closure may make some material less visible and remove one prominent place where it was organized and circulated. It does not guarantee that a person’s images have been removed from every copy or service. Addressing reposts can require separate action with the services hosting or indexing them; a single site’s closure is not a resolution for everyone depicted.
The central distinction is between taking away one distribution point and ending the underlying abuse. Mr. Deepfakes announced that it would not return, but its notice cannot erase material already copied or prevent others from creating and sharing new content.
