The DC Rivals HyperCoaster at Warner Bros. Movie World on Queensland’s Gold Coast stopped on April 8, 2026, with passengers aboard. A park spokesperson attributed the stoppage to a ride sensor activation. Riders exited from designated safe-stop zones with staff assistance; according to Village Roadshow Theme Parks, they then walked down the lift hill. The reports do not identify which sensor activated or why.

What happened on the DC Rivals HyperCoaster?

The Guardian reported on April 8 that the DC Rivals HyperCoaster had stopped with riders on the track. Video showed passengers approximately 10 metres above the ground, and the report said staff helped them exit from safe-stop zones. The Guardian’s April 8 report attributed the stated cause to a park spokesperson, who said the ride stopped because of “a ride sensor activation.”

InDaily’s account, published April 9, said the coaster had stopped on an uphill section. It reported estimates of about 20 people aboard, roughly 10 metres above ground, and around two hours before the passengers were evacuated. These are reported estimates, not independently verified measurements. InDaily’s April 9 report quoted Village Roadshow Theme Parks as saying guests were safe throughout and staff remained in communication with them.

How were the passengers evacuated?

Village Roadshow Theme Parks said riders left the coaster from safe-stop zones with staff assistance, then walked down the lift hill. The park spokesperson described staff as being in “constant communication” with the passengers. That is the operator’s account; the published reports do not provide an independent medical assessment of each passenger.

Movie World’s general ride and rider guidance tells visitors to follow attendant instructions and be able to navigate evacuation stairwells and pathways. It notes that a stoppage can require exiting somewhere other than the usual loading or unloading point, potentially involving stairs or varied terrain. This is general visitor guidance, not a detailed account of the emergency procedure used on DC Rivals that day.

What caused the stoppage—and what remains unknown?

The explanation attributed to the park was “a ride sensor activation.” The reports reviewed do not identify the sensor, explain why it activated, give a detailed engineering diagnosis, or report later investigation findings. Sensor activation alone does not establish that a component was defective or that a mechanical failure occurred. The available reporting describes a stoppage and evacuation, not a crash or derailment.

How this incident differs from earlier Movie World evacuations

Earlier incidents involved different attractions and reported circumstances. They provide context, but they do not establish the cause or exact evacuation process for DC Rivals in 2026.

September 2022 — Scooby-Doo Coaster ABC reported that four people were stopped about 10 metres up for roughly an hour and a half. The outlet attributed the stoppage to a technical fault during an incident involving guest behaviour. QFES and park management retrieved the four people using a cherry picker; other carriages had stopped at safe removal points. ABC reported no injuries. ABC’s September 4, 2022 report.
January 2017 — Arkham Asylum ABC reported a chain malfunction on the ride. Twenty people were evacuated using a cherry picker and ladder platform; ABC reported no injuries and said Workplace Health and Safety officers were investigating. ABC’s January 12, 2017 report.

The different rides, reported triggers, and rescue methods mean these events should not be treated as equivalent or as evidence of a shared cause. The figures above describe individual reported incidents, not a broader ride-stoppage rate or safety study.
