The stills also offered a look at returning Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada. They show the characters’ screen designs—not new plot events. The film’s official site currently lists a North American theatrical and IMAX release for May 8, 2026, with international release beginning May 6.
What the first-look images revealed
Entertainment Weekly presented the images as an exclusive, and reports published March 17, 2025 by GameSpot and ComicBook.com identified the three newly highlighted characters and their actors.
- Johnny Cage: Karl Urban plays the Hollywood actor who joins the champions.
- Kitana: Adeline Rudolph plays the princess. The still shows her steel fans.
- Shao Kahn: Martyn Ford plays the ruler, whose mask covers nearly all of his face in the image.
- Scorpion: The first-look coverage also identifies a new image of Hiroyuki Sanada returning as the character.
The visible props and costumes describe the images; they do not, by themselves, confirm how a scene unfolds or what happens to any character.
Who is Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II?
Cage is the Hollywood figure the heroes were seeking at the end of the 2021 film. The sequel’s official synopsis says the champions are now joined by Cage as they face Shao Kahn’s rule. Co-creator Ed Boon described the character as “a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing,” in a statement reported by GameSpot.

What is confirmed about the sequel’s story?
The official film site says the champions, with Johnny Cage now among them, must battle to defeat Shao Kahn’s dark rule, which threatens Earthrealm and its defenders. That is the stated premise; the first-look images do not establish additional story details.
Director Simon McQuoid said, “Just let it rip, and that’s what we’ve done,” according to GameSpot. The stills do not show every character or settle who appears in every sequence, so a character’s absence from an image is not evidence that they are absent from the movie.
