Homelander’s Animality is a griffin, not an eagle
The finishing move transforms Homelander into a griffin decked out in his signature red, white, and blue. In the reveal, the creature tears its victim apart and ends the attack with Homelander’s laser vision.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat and NetherRealm Studios’ chief creative officer, told Entertainment Weekly that the team initially considered an eagle. That idea felt too close to Peacemaker’s eagle companion, Eagly, so the developers iterated toward a less familiar form. “It became this griffin, a little bit more interesting than just a regular everyday eagle,” Boon said.
What the reveal says about the other Animalities
Entertainment Weekly’s account of the reveal video also describes Peacemaker becoming Eagly, Omni-Man summoning the Hail Mary kaiju from Invincible, and Johnny Cage turning into a shark. These are the forms shown or described in that 2024 reveal, not a complete list of Animalities in the game.

Animalities are free; Khaos Reigns is not required
Animalities returned in a free update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners. You do not need to purchase Khaos Reigns to use them. Warner Bros. Games described Animalities as finishing moves that let playable characters morph into their spirit animals; the update also added Towers of Time and four arenas.
Khaos Reigns is a separate story expansion and fighter pack. It launched September 24, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Its story expansion requires the base game and is available digitally only, according to the official Mortal Kombat FAQ. The FAQ says the base game is available physically and digitally on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, and on PC through Steam and Epic Games Store.

Why the reveal was an exclusive
Entertainment Weekly published the reveal and Boon interview on September 23, 2024, one day before the expansion’s launch. The timing made the griffin a preview of the returning finishing-move feature, rather than a new announcement about current game content.
Warner Bros. Games’ launch announcement described Khaos Reigns as adding a cinematic story expansion and Kombat Pack 2. Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot were available at launch; guest fighters Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian were also included in the pack.
