Monster: The Ed Gein Story is the third season of Netflix’s Monster anthology. Charlie Hunnam stars as Gein in an eight-episode drama inspired by the real case—not a documentary or a scene-by-scene historical record.
What is Monster: The Ed Gein Story about?
Netflix describes the season as a dramatization inspired by Ed Gein, a recluse from Plainfield, Wisconsin. Its synopsis frames the story around rural life in the 1950s, isolation, psychosis and Gein’s relationship with his mother, Augusta. Those are elements of the show’s framing, not a clinical diagnosis or proof that every scene reflects established historical fact.
Netflix says Gein was active in Plainfield from 1947 to 1957. TIME’s historical overview places his arrest in 1957 and discusses the cases of Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan. The series’ scenes should be understood as dramatic interpretation; for historical context, see TIME’s overview of the real case.
When was it released, and how many episodes are there?
Netflix’s Media Center announced a global premiere for Friday, October 3, 2025. Netflix Tudum’s season guide, dated November 26, 2025, says all eight episodes are available to stream. Catalog availability can vary by territory and change over time, so check the local Netflix listing. The service displays a TV-MA rating on its season title card; another Netflix page shows 18+, so viewers should consult their regional listing for the applicable age guidance.

How does Gein’s case connect to horror films?
Netflix and TIME connect Gein’s crimes to the cultural influence behind Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. “Inspired by” or “influenced by” is the careful description: these are fictional works, not direct biographies or exact retellings of Gein’s case. Netflix’s synopsis foregrounds that legacy as part of the season’s subject.

Where can you learn more about the real case?
Harold Schechter’s nonfiction book Deviant: The Shocking True Story of the Original “Psycho” is listed by its publisher as an account of Gein and the case’s influence on later horror. It is independent further reading, not an official Netflix companion. See the Simon & Schuster publisher page.
