More than 200,000 Washington Post digital subscribers had canceled by midday October 28, 2024, according to NPR reporting cited by Forbes. The next day, the Post reported a higher gross count: at least 250,000 cancellations since its decision to stop endorsing presidential candidates. Neither figure establishes the paper’s final net subscriber loss.
How many Washington Post subscribers canceled?
The first widely reported snapshot was more than 200,000 digital cancellations by midday Monday, October 28, 2024. Forbes, citing NPR, said that was about 8% of the Post’s paid circulation—not 8% of its digital subscriber base. The count was still rising that afternoon. Forbes, October 28, 2024
On October 29, The Washington Post reported at least 250,000 cancellations through Tuesday, or about 10% of its digital subscribers. The newspaper based that later figure on internal documents and two people familiar with the numbers who were not named. The Washington Post, October 29, 2024
| Reported snapshot | Cancellation figure | Reported share and denominator |
|---|---|---|
| By midday October 28, 2024; NPR figure cited by Forbes | More than 200,000 digital cancellations | About 8% of paid circulation |
| Through October 29, 2024; reported by The Washington Post | At least 250,000 cancellations | About 10% of digital subscribers |
The percentages use different denominators, so they should not be compared as though they measure the same share. The Post’s October 29 report said its digital subscriber count was about 2.5 million in October 2024, down from a peak of 3 million in January 2021. The paper is privately held and does not typically publish subscriber data; it declined to comment on the cancellation figures. The Washington Post, October 29, 2024

Why the cancellation total is not the same as net subscriber loss
The 250,000 figure counted cancellations, not the final change in the number of active subscribers. It did not subtract new sign-ups or account for people who re-subscribed. Some subscribers on annual plans also retained access until their subscriptions expired. The report therefore does not establish a final net loss, a precise revenue impact, or how many people permanently left.
What prompted the cancellations?
The Post ended presidential endorsements
On October 25, 2024, publisher and CEO William Lewis announced that The Washington Post would not endorse a candidate in that year’s presidential election or in future presidential elections. The Post reported that an endorsement draft backing Kamala Harris had been prepared but not published, and attributed the decision to owner Jeff Bezos based on accounts from four people briefed on the matter. Lewis made the public announcement; the reported attribution to Bezos came from those anonymous sources. The Washington Post, October 25, 2024

Bezos and Lewis defended the policy; critics objected
Bezos argued that presidential endorsements do not change election outcomes and instead create a perception of bias and non-independence. He described the move as a principle-based effort to restore public trust, while expressing regret about its proximity to Election Day. Jeff Bezos, The Washington Post, October 28, 2024
Lewis described the policy as a return to the paper’s roots, saying readers could make up their own minds. The Associated Press reported that the Post’s opinion operation is structurally separate from its newsroom. Former executive editor Martin Baron condemned the decision, calling it “cowardice” and “a disturbing chapter of spinelessness” at an institution known for courage. Those criticisms reflect opponents’ judgments; the reported subscriber totals do not establish why any individual canceled. What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
- They show a large wave of reported cancellations following the announcement, with the reported gross count rising from more than 200,000 in the first snapshot to at least 250,000 in the later one.
- They do not show a verified, final net decline in subscribers, a lasting loss of 250,000 readers, or an exact amount of lost revenue.
- The 8% and 10% figures refer to different subscriber measures: paid circulation in the early report and digital subscribers in the later report.
- The figures are from contemporaneous reporting, not an audited public disclosure of the Post’s subscriber records.
