Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation is a 2024 anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s 1994 one-shot manga. Its roughly 25-minute story follows samurai Ryuma, whose path crosses with waitress Flare after a dragon destroys her hometown. The adaptation is a short standalone watch; the original story is available to read through VIZ and in the collection Wanted! Eiichiro Oda Before One Piece.
What is Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation about?
The story follows Ryuma, a samurai, and Flare, a young waitress whose hometown was destroyed by a dragon. Netflix’s synopsis sets up their connection, while Mediatoon identifies Ryuma, Flare, and Cyrano among the story’s characters. The title’s full anime name is Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation.
It adapts an early Oda one-shot rather than a long-running manga series. The original Monsters appeared in 1994 in Shonen Jump Autumn Special and was reprinted in Oda’s 1998 short-story collection Wanted!, according to Mediatoon Licensing.
Is Monsters connected to One Piece?
The connection established by the available sources is Eiichiro Oda: he created both works, and Monsters is one of his early stories. VIZ’s collection is titled Wanted! Eiichiro Oda Before One Piece, and its publisher listing includes the Monsters one-shot. However, the sources cited here do not establish an authoritative continuity classification or a precise place for the anime in One Piece chronology. It is safer to describe it as an Oda story with a connection through its creator than to call it a confirmed prequel.
