Can YouTube Live Play a Recorded Lecture Playlist Automatically?

YouTube Live takes an encoder’s feed rather than automatically playing an existing recorded lecture playlist. Here’s what scheduling and auto-start control—and how to broadcast recordings instead.

No—not on its own, according to YouTube’s documented Live workflow. YouTube Live accepts a feed sent by an encoder; YouTube’s instructions do not describe selecting an existing playlist of recorded lectures and having Live play it automatically. To broadcast recordings as a live event, you need an external playback source and an encoder to send that playback to YouTube.

What YouTube Live does—and does not—automate

YouTube’s documented process is to create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and key into an encoder, configure the encoder, and start sending the feed. For a scheduled broadcast, you start the encoder and then preview and start the event in Live Control Room. Scheduling creates an upcoming live event that can be promoted and may notify viewers; it does not turn a YouTube playlist into a playback job.

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that turns a selected source into the live feed sent to YouTube. Its guidance does not prescribe a particular encoder or playlist application for recorded lectures. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the encoder-based workflow, while its live-streaming overview describes live video as a real-time feed.

What “automatically” can mean

Starting and stopping a stream

YouTube’s encoder settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. Those control when the stream connection starts or ends; they do not select recordings or advance through a playlist. A scheduled live stream likewise sets up an event for a future time, not automatic playback of a recorded lecture playlist.

Playing a sequence of recordings

For a continuous broadcast of recorded lectures, a separate playback source must play the recordings and an encoder must send that output as the live feed. YouTube’s documentation does not identify or endorse a particular tool for automating the sequence. Before relying on a third-party setup, check that its own documentation confirms it can play the files or playlist in the order and schedule you need, and that it can deliver the resulting feed to YouTube.

A practical route for broadcasting recorded lectures

  1. Choose the source material. Decide which recordings to include and the order in which they should play. Confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast them.
  2. Set up playback and encoding outside YouTube. Use a playback source to play the recordings and an encoder to send that output as a live feed. Verify the encoder’s documentation for playlist sequencing and unattended operation; YouTube’s instructions do not establish those capabilities for any particular product.
  3. Create or schedule the live event in YouTube Studio. Copy the event’s stream URL and key into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
  4. Configure and test the feed. Confirm the selected source is visible and audible in the encoder preview, then send the feed. For a scheduled event, use Live Control Room to preview it and start the event when ready.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. A playlist or playback process can stop, and a live event may need attention. Do not assume that YouTube’s auto-start or auto-stop settings will restart playback or move to the next lecture.

Plan for the live archive limit

YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an extended lecture broadcast needs a recording, check YouTube’s current archive behavior and keep a separate local recording where appropriate. YouTube’s archive guidance describes this duration qualification.
