Your phone is enough to start making YouTube videos and mobile live streams. Choose the right framing for where viewers will watch, use soft light, get the microphone close to the speaker, and test the full setup before going live. For a mobile live stream, check YouTube’s eligibility requirements first; for a recorded video, decide on landscape or portrait before you press record.

Set up a phone video viewers can see and hear

Choose landscape or portrait before recording

For high-definition recorded footage, YouTube’s mobile-video guidance recommends holding the phone horizontally for a 16:9 frame. If the video is intended for a vertical or square format, choose that before recording so the subject and important details fit the frame.

Live streams have a different consideration: vertical live streams may appear in YouTube’s mobile vertical live feed. Choose portrait or landscape according to how viewers are likely to find and watch the stream. If you create both formats through Live Control Room, YouTube says the vertical version is a center crop by default, so keep the subject within the central part of the frame.

Use the camera that suits the shot

Use the rear camera when practical; YouTube describes it as the better choice for visuals. The front camera is useful when you need to see yourself or monitor chat while streaming. If you film with the rear camera, a second device can let you follow chat without giving up that camera.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Silence notifications before recording or streaming. If your camera app offers manual controls, lock focus and exposure once the shot is set so they do not shift unexpectedly during a take.

Find soft, even light

Improve the available light before buying equipment. Indoors, try placing the subject near a window; outdoors, move into shade to reduce harsh shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light back onto a shadowed side of the face. Aim for soft, even illumination that keeps detail visible.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Make speech clear at the source

Move close enough to the phone’s microphone for speech to be intelligible, keep the mic unobstructed, and avoid noisy locations or unnecessary movement. In rooms with hard, reflective surfaces, soft materials can help reduce the effect of echoes. In a loud environment, consider an external microphone, but check that it is compatible with your phone and connector before buying.

Record and upload a video with your phone

  1. Choose the destination format. Decide whether you need landscape 16:9, portrait, or square footage before you record. YouTube’s mobile-video guidance recommends horizontal 16:9 for high-definition footage.
  2. Set the shot. Use the rear camera if practical, silence notifications, and lock focus and exposure if your camera controls allow it.
  3. Set the light and sound. Put the subject in soft, even light and make sure the phone’s microphone is close to the speaker and not covered.
  4. Record a short test. Check that the subject is framed correctly, the image is not too dark, and speech is easy to understand before recording the full take.
  5. Upload in the YouTube app. On Android, YouTube’s upload flow can record a new video or select an existing file. YouTube says a square or vertical video of three minutes or less may be uploaded as a Short; confirm the current app behavior when publishing.

Go live from the YouTube mobile app

Check eligibility and activation time first

YouTube’s mobile live help, accessed in 2026, lists at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and a supported device as requirements. The first activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general live-stream help says streamers must be at least 16. Check the current eligibility information for your account before scheduling an event, since requirements and features can change.

Prepare and test the phone

  1. Charge the phone. An external battery pack may be useful for a longer stream. YouTube’s mobile-live tips estimate battery use at about 1% per minute of streaming; this is an approximate platform tip, not a guarantee for any particular phone.
  2. Enable Do Not Disturb. This reduces the chance that notifications interrupt the stream.
  3. Choose the format and lock orientation. Decide between portrait and landscape before starting, then lock the phone’s rotation so the frame does not change mid-stream.
  4. Check the connection. Test the internet connection where you plan to stream, rather than assuming a connection that works for browsing will be reliable for live video.
  5. Choose the camera and chat setup. Use the front camera if seeing chat is more important; use the rear camera for better visuals and, if available, a second device to monitor chat.
  6. Run an unlisted test live stream. Check both picture and sound before the public event. YouTube recommends using an unlisted live stream to test video and audio quality.

Consider how people will watch

YouTube says vertical live streams may appear in its mobile Shorts feed. If you use Live Control Room to create horizontal and vertical formats together, plan the framing around the center crop used for the vertical version by default. Keep faces, text, and other essential details away from the far edges of the horizontal frame.

Choose the practical setup for your situation

Decision Option When it helps Trade-off
Recorded-video framing Landscape 16:9 When following YouTube’s mobile guidance for high-definition footage Not the vertical framing used for mobile vertical live discovery
Framing for a live stream Portrait 9:16 When mobile vertical live discovery is a priority Plan for the vertical viewing frame; a vertical version made through Live Control Room is center-cropped by default
Live camera Front camera When you need to see yourself or chat YouTube describes the rear camera as better for visuals
Live camera Rear camera When image quality and visuals take priority A second device can help monitor chat
Lighting Window, shade, or white card As a no- or low-cost way to improve light Available light may take some repositioning to become soft and even
Lighting Dedicated reflector When you need a convenient way to bounce light Optional; a white card can serve as a simple alternative
Audio Built-in microphone, close and unobstructed In a reasonably quiet location Less suitable for loud environments
Audio External microphone When the setting is loud Phone and connector compatibility varies; check before buying

Troubleshoot common phone-video problems

The image looks dark or harsh

  • Cause: The subject is in direct, harsh sun or poorly lit indoors.
  • Fix: Move into shade or nearer a window. Try a white card or reflector to bounce light onto the subject.

The image changes brightness or focus during a take

  • Cause: Automatic focus or exposure is adjusting as the scene changes.
  • Fix: If your phone’s camera app allows it, set and lock focus and exposure before recording.

Speech is hard to understand

  • Cause: The phone is too far away, its mic is covered, or the location is noisy or echo-prone.
  • Fix: Move closer, uncover the microphone, reduce noise and movement, and soften reflective surroundings. Consider a compatible external microphone for a loud setting.

The phone rotates or the frame is wrong

  • Cause: Orientation was not chosen or locked before the live stream began.
  • Fix: Decide on portrait or landscape first and lock rotation. For a combined horizontal and vertical Live Control Room stream, keep important content inside the center area.

The stream cannot start

  • Cause: The channel may not meet mobile-live eligibility requirements, live streaming may not be enabled yet, or initial activation may still be processing.
  • Fix: Check the account’s current eligibility and activation status before the event; allow up to 24 hours for first activation according to YouTube’s mobile-live help.

The live stream is interrupted

  • Cause: The connection may not be reliable where the phone is streaming.
  • Fix: Test the connection in the actual location before going live. If a one-phone setup leaves you unable to monitor the stream, use a second device where available.
