The official Moana 2 trailer introduces Moana’s little sister, Simea, and a mysterious new character named Matangi. It does not officially call Matangi a villain: Disney describes her as mysterious, while a later Associated Press review characterizes her as “a kind of villain for the movie.”
Who is Moana’s little sister in the Moana 2 trailer?
Moana’s little sister is Simea, voiced by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda. Disney’s trailer description calls Simea Moana’s “adoring and adorable little sister.” Her introduction gives Moana a new family connection in the sequel, though the trailer’s description does not spell out Simea’s role in the voyage.
Who is Matangi, and is she Moana 2’s new villain?
Matangi is a mysterious new character voiced by Awhimai Fraser. Disney’s official trailer description keeps her role open, and D23 says she “challenges everything Moana thinks she knows about herself.” Those descriptions establish her as a disruptive, enigmatic presence, but do not confirm her motives or formally label her a villain.
The “villain” wording is an interpretation supported by later coverage, not Disney’s trailer label. In its review of the released film, the Associated Press described Matangi as “a kind of villain for the movie.” That qualified description is more precise than presenting her as the sequel’s unequivocal main antagonist.

What does the trailer reveal about the story?
The trailer places the sequel three years after the events of the first Moana. Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, reunites with Maui, and sails to the far seas of Oceania with an unlikely new crew. The premise points to a new voyage; the trailer’s official description does not reveal the full nature of Matangi’s challenge.
Who made Moana 2?
Walt Disney Animation Studios released the official trailer on August 9, 2024. The film is directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, with a screenplay by Jared Bush and Miller. In an Associated Press report, Derrick described the film’s collaborative spirit with a Samoan saying: “There’s a saying in Samoa: ‘All together or not at all.’” This is Derrick’s comment about the filmmaking, not a line of dialogue from the movie.
