For many beginners, Linux users, hobbyists and hardware-flexible DJs, Mixxx is the strongest free and open-source desktop DJ option. It is a complete application—not a trial or restricted “Lite” edition—and supports Windows, macOS and Linux. But it is not the best fit for every performer: controller support varies by model, and DJs who depend on club-standard Pioneer/AlphaTheta workflows or Serato-specific hardware may be better served by those ecosystems.
As of August 16, 2026, the Mixxx download page lists version 2.5.6 as the stable release recommended for live use. The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on whether Mixxx works with your hardware, library and venue workflow.
What Mixxx is—and what “free” means
Mixxx is desktop DJ software for live mixing, practice, recording, broadcasting and automated playback. Its complete application is available at no cost, with no official paid or “Pro” edition. The source code is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later, which allows users to inspect, modify and redistribute it under the license terms. Free software does not make the whole setup free. A controller, headphones, audio interface, speakers, turntables, music and cables may all cost money. Some hardware also needs manufacturer drivers, particularly on Windows. Open-source licensing does not guarantee better sound, vendor support or compatibility with every device.

Current version and operating-system support
The project’s download page listed Mixxx 2.5.6 as the stable release recommended for live use on August 16, 2026. It also listed 2.6 beta and 2.7 alpha/development builds, which the project says are not intended for live performance. Back up Mixxx settings and library data before trying a development build. For Ubuntu’s stable PPA route, the official instructions specify Ubuntu 22.04 “Jammy Jellyfish” or later and give these commands:

What you can do with Mixxx
Mix on up to four decks
Mixxx provides four decks, tempo and beat detection, musical-key detection, sync lock, hotcues, loops, waveforms and beat grids. You can beatmatch by ear and adjust pitch and tempo manually, or use sync as an aid. Crossfader and channel-fader controls, along with EQ and isolator options, support different mixing styles. Analysis is a starting point, not a guarantee. Live recordings, variable-tempo tracks, unusual arrangements and unclear intros can produce inaccurate BPM readings or beat grids. Listen, correct grids where needed and use cue points rather than trusting an analysis label blindly.

Effects and samplers
Mixxx supports effect chains, customizable effect parameters and controller assignments. Its feature page lists up to 64 sampler decks. That is a maximum capability, not a promise that a performer can comfortably operate that many in a live set; practical control depends on the interface and controller mapping. Mixxx features
Music library and playlists
The library includes search and sorting, playlists, crates and MusicBrainz tag lookup. The project says Mixxx can read local libraries from iTunes, Traktor, Banshee, Rekordbox, Rhythmbox and Serato. Reading another application’s library should not be mistaken for perfect two-way synchronization: test a copy before migrating a working collection, especially if you rely on particular cue points, loops, grids, ratings or playlist details. Mixxx includes recording and broadcasting features, useful for capturing a practice session or sending a mix to a compatible streaming server. Before a session, check the selected inputs and outputs, monitor levels, confirm the recording format and make sure there is enough storage. Auto DJ can play a playlist and make transitions, which can help with background music, breaks, stream automation or testing a queue. It cannot replace human track selection, phrasing, crowd awareness or the ability to take control when a transition goes wrong. Mixxx manual
Timecode vinyl and CD control
Mixxx supports timecode vinyl and CDs for controlling digital tracks from turntables or CDJs. A working setup needs compatible control media, suitable inputs and outputs, correct routing and calibration. Depending on the equipment, it may also require phono-level connections and turntable grounding. A mixer’s USB port alone does not establish that it can provide the required DVS inputs, outputs and routing. Check the exact mixer or interface against Mixxx’s hardware documentation. Will Mixxx work with your controller or audio interface?
Mixxx supports MIDI and HID controllers, but “supports MIDI” does not mean every device is fully mapped. A controller may appear in the operating system yet have no Mixxx mapping, or only some controls may work. Displays, pads, jog-wheel modes, motorized platters and effects controls can have different levels of support. Mixxx can use audio hardware supported by the operating system; on Windows, a manufacturer driver may be needed to use the recommended ASIO sound API. Mixxx hardware compatibility documentation
Before buying, check the exact model in the official hardware documentation, then confirm the mapping’s status and the functions you need. USB Audio Class-compliant devices are generally more promising for cross-platform use, including Linux, but class compliance alone does not guarantee a complete Mixxx mapping. The project’s documentation notes that a device working on macOS without a manufacturer driver, or being advertised for iOS, can be a useful class-compliance clue—not proof that every feature will work. - Check the exact model, not just the manufacturer or product family.
- Find out whether its mapping is included, community-created, partial or absent, and whether it applies to your Mixxx version.
- Confirm whether the controller has an integrated audio interface and whether it provides independent master and headphone outputs.
- Verify drivers for your operating system and test transport, faders, jogs, pads, displays and effects separately.
- If support is unclear, prefer a returnable purchase and keep keyboard or mouse access as a fallback.
Can you use Mixxx without a DJ controller?
Yes. Mixxx can be operated with a computer keyboard and mouse as well as MIDI/HID controllers, CD players and turntables. That makes it practical for learning, laptop-only practice or trying the workflow before buying equipment. Keyboard and mouse control is less tactile, so it is generally less suited to fast or expressive live performance than a well-mapped controller. Mixxx manual
Getting started: install, prepare and test
- Install the stable release. Open the official download page, select your operating system and choose 2.5.6 as listed on August 16, 2026. On macOS, select the Intel or ARM build for your computer.
- Locate or import your music. Keep your existing folder structure where practical. Moving files later can break library paths.
- Analyze tracks. Let Mixxx calculate BPM, beat-grid and key information, then check results by listening before relying on sync.
- Configure audio. Select the intended master output and, if using headphones, the cue output. Confirm the output devices and routing before loading a set.
- Connect and configure your controller. Verify the exact model and mapping, then test the controls you will use.
- Rehearse the complete signal path. Test headphone cueing, master output, recording and any external mixer or DVS routing. Practice recovering from a disconnected controller or changed audio device.
- Back up before a major change. Preserve music, Mixxx settings and the library database before testing another package source, moving computers or installing a beta build.

Is Mixxx a good choice for beginners?
Mixxx removes the software purchase barrier and lets beginners learn decks, cueing, looping, beatmatching, playlists and recording on a keyboard or controller. It also runs on Linux as well as Windows and macOS, so a learner does not have to adopt a particular commercial ecosystem just to start. Mixxx downloads Mixxx manual

The trade-off is configuration. Audio routing can be confusing, controller mappings differ, and library paths can break when files move. Sync and automatic analysis still need judgment. Linux users may need to resolve package, driver or audio-subsystem issues. Because hardware support is not uniform, “free” does not necessarily mean “plug in any controller and everything works.”
Is Mixxx suitable for professional performances?
It can be a credible professional tool when the performer uses tested hardware, controls the laptop setup, has rehearsed routing, backs up the library and does not depend on a venue-specific proprietary export format. The project recommends 2.5.6 for live use, but that is not a guarantee that every computer, controller or audio interface will behave flawlessly. A different platform may be safer when a venue expects rekordbox-prepared USB media, a controller’s important functions are designed for Serato or rekordbox, or a team needs the same vendor-supported workflow across performers. The deciding issue is the exact hardware and venue process, not whether one application is inherently “professional.”

A controller connects, but its controls do not work
Possible causes include a missing or outdated mapping, the wrong MIDI/HID mode, an absent driver, partial support or an unsupported proprietary protocol. Check whether the operating system sees the device, then check Mixxx’s exact-model documentation and test the supplied mapping or controller setup. Master audio works, but headphones do not
Check that Mixxx has selected the intended cue device and that headphones are plugged into the correct jack. A controller’s built-in interface may need to be selected explicitly; the operating system’s default output may have changed, or a driver or sample-rate conflict may be involved. Recheck sound-hardware routing in the manual for your installed version, then test with the computer’s output and the controller’s interface separately. Mixxx manual
Beat grids or track analysis seem wrong
Variable-tempo tracks, live recordings, unusual downbeats and poorly defined intros can confuse automatic analysis. Listen critically, correct the grid manually where needed, and use cue points for tracks that do not analyze cleanly.
Tracks disappear after moving a library
Changing drives or folder locations can break file paths. Preserve the folder structure if possible, back up the Mixxx database and settings, and test migrations on a copy. The project specifically warns that switching to Flatpak does not automatically recover earlier database data and settings. Mixxx installation and migration notes

Timecode does not calibrate
Check the timecode media, turntable grounding, phono/line switch, input gain, channel wiring, interface inputs and outputs, mixer routing and control-mode settings. Confirm that the interface actually exposes the channels your setup needs; a USB connection alone is not proof of DVS compatibility.
A beta or development build is being considered for a gig
Use the stable release for live work. The project says its beta and development builds are not intended for live use; back up settings and library data before testing them. Mixxx release guidance
