Mixxx 2.3.4, released March 3, 2023, added built-in controller mappings for the first-generation Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 and the original Numark Party Mix. That meant Mixxx could interpret those controllers’ controls without users having to create a mapping themselves; it did not add firmware, make every model in either product family compatible, or guarantee an exact copy of the manufacturers’ software experience. Mixxx 2.3.4 is now an older release: the project lists Mixxx 2.5.6 as its current stable version, so that is the sensible choice for most new installations.
What changed in Mixxx 2.3.4?
The headline change was the addition of bundled mappings for the Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk1 and original Numark Party Mix. A controller mapping translates hardware messages into Mixxx actions—for example, turning a knob into a library browse command or pressing a pad into a hotcue trigger.
The March 3, 2023 release also included Intel Mac support for macOS 13 Ventura, macOS interface-performance and translation fixes, metadata-import fixes involving MusicBrainz, Rekordbox databases and Serato metadata, skin fixes for Tango and LateNight, and other corrections. It also adjusted several Numark mappings, including attention to inverted pitch or rate sliders in some configurations. Controller mappings can be added in a maintenance release; their inclusion did not require Mixxx to move to a new major version. See the 2.3.4 announcement and 2.3 changelog.

Mixxx support here means that the software ships with a mapping for the specified controller. It is not a new hardware release, firmware update, or certification from Native Instruments or Numark. A mapping makes the controller’s MIDI or HID messages useful to Mixxx, but it need not duplicate every vendor-specific feature, button response, light, or effect. The operating system must also recognize the device, and audio must be routed correctly.

Model names matter. The S2 mapping announced in 2.3.4 is for the Mk1, not automatically the Mk2 or Mk3. The Party Mix mapping is for the original Party Mix, not necessarily the Party Mix II, Party Mix Live, or later variants. If you are unsure which S2 you have, the Mixxx manual notes that the Mk1 has black plastic pressure-sensitive jog-wheel tops, while the Mk2 has shiny aluminum tops. Check the exact hardware before selecting a mapping.
Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk1: controls and limitations
The S2 Mk1 is a two-deck controller with an integrated audio interface. Mixxx’s mapping covers core deck and mixer operation: transport, cue and sync controls, tempo, hotcues, intro/outro cues, sampler functions, library browsing and track loading. The jog wheels can scratch when pressed on top and nudge the track when moved at the edge; Shift plus a jog wheel provides fast seeking. The mapping also covers EQ, channel faders, crossfader, level meters and standard Mixxx effects. Decks can be assigned to effect units.
Some controls follow Mixxx’s workflow rather than Traktor’s. The left loop encoder is used for beat-jumping and loop movement; pressing and turning it changes the beat-jump size. The right encoder changes loop size, and pressing it toggles the loop. Shift plus a channel-cue control toggles quantize.

The S2 Mk1’s master and headphone levels are handled by hardware controls in the documented mapping, rather than being mapped as ordinary Mixxx software gains. This avoids applying the same gain adjustment twice. Its master output uses channels 1–2 and its headphone output channels 3–4, so selecting the right channel pairs in Mixxx is essential for separate headphone cueing.
There is one notable input limitation: according to the Mixxx S2 Mk1 manual, the controller routes its microphone internally, and Mixxx cannot access that input. The manual describes the device as USB audio- and HID-class-compliant on Linux and macOS, with no proprietary driver required there. For Windows, it directs users to install the latest Native Instruments driver. Class compliance does not guarantee trouble-free operation on every current system; USB, driver, power and audio-routing issues can still occur.
Original Numark Party Mix: controls and limitations
The bundled mapping for the original Party Mix provides basic two-deck control. It supports library browsing and track loading, master gain, cue mix and headphone gain, two-channel EQ, channel volume and crossfader controls, as well as cue, sync, play/pause, pitch faders and hotcues.

The jog wheels can scratch when scratch mode is enabled or bend pitch when it is disabled. In the documented mapping, scratch mode is off by default. The pads can switch among hotcue, auto-loop, sampler and effects modes. Auto-loop sizes default to 4, 8, 16 and 32 beats. These are mapping defaults, not fixed specifications of the hardware.

Jog and loop behavior can be tuned in Numark-Party-Mix.scripts.js. The manual lists defaults such as jogScratchSensitivity at 340, jogPitchSensitivity at 10, jogSearchSensitivity at 1/2, and loop sizes of 4, 8, 16 and 32. Change these only if the default response does not suit you, and keep in mind that script settings describe the mapping rather than universal Party Mix hardware behavior. Install and check the mapping
- Install the current Mixxx release. Download it from the official download page. As of August 2026, that page lists 2.5.6 as stable. Use 2.3.4 only if you specifically need to reproduce that older software environment.
- Connect the controller by USB before launching Mixxx. Use a known data-capable cable and, if detection is unreliable, connect directly rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Open Mixxx’s controller configuration or preferences area. Select the detected device and enable its supplied Mixxx mapping, making sure the selected model is the exact S2 Mk1 or original Party Mix. Labels and menu locations can vary by Mixxx version; consult the manual for your installed version if needed.
- Set up audio outputs. Route master audio to the controller’s main outputs. For the S2 Mk1, assign headphones separately to channels 3–4, with master on 1–2. Confirm the headphone cue mix and volume work before relying on them.
- Test before a set. Load tracks on both decks and check play/pause, cue, jog response, pitch faders, crossfader, master output, headphone cueing, hotcues and loops. Save or confirm the configuration once it works.
If Mixxx does not detect the controller, first check the cable and whether the operating system sees the device. Restart Mixxx after connecting it; on Windows with an S2 Mk1, check the applicable Native Instruments driver. Close Traktor or other software that may be holding the device, and verify that you chose the mapping for the exact model. Mixxx’s controller diagnostics and logs can help distinguish detection problems from a mapping problem. For a later Party Mix model, do not assume the original model’s mapping is appropriate; check the current manual or Mixxx community resources.

If headphones are silent on an S2 Mk1, verify the separate headphone output assignment before blaming the mapping. A missing microphone input is expected according to the manual. If a Party Mix jog wheel does not scratch, check whether scratch mode is enabled. If pitch moves in an unexpected direction, check the chosen mapping and slider behavior; the 2.3.4 announcement specifically mentions fixes and adjustments to inverted pitch/rate sliders in some Numark mappings.
Should you install Mixxx 2.3.4 now?
Usually, no. Mixxx 2.3.4 is useful as a historical reference for when these two mappings were added, but it is not the current stable release. For a normal installation, use the current version listed on Mixxx’s download page; the project announced 2.5.6 on March 27, 2026. Later releases have continued refining controller mappings, so older instructions may not describe every current behavior. On Ubuntu, Mixxx says its project PPA is preferable to the Software Centre package, which may lag behind. The download page also warns that moving to Flatpak from a distribution package or source build may not automatically restore the old settings and music database.
Mixxx is free and open source, with no official paid or “Pro” edition. It is a good fit if you already own one of these controllers and want a desktop DJ application without a software purchase or subscription. The S2 Mk1 offers a fuller control surface and integrated audio routing, but its microphone limitation and Windows driver requirement may matter. The Party Mix is simpler and compact, but has fewer controls and the original mapping should not be presumed compatible with later Party Mix versions.
If exact Traktor behavior or the S2 microphone path is essential, remaining in the Traktor ecosystem may suit you better. If your priority is an open-source option—particularly on Linux—Mixxx offers a practical way to use the specified legacy hardware, provided you verify the exact model, mapping and audio routing before performing.
