Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning did not dethrone a “lowest-rated movie” at the box office. The phrase came from an early, franchise-only Rotten Tomatoes comparison: on May 16, 2025, the film had an 81% Tomatometer score from 136 reviews, then the lowest for a Mission: Impossible film since 2006. That was a dated critics’ score—not an all-movie ranking, a box-office record, or the film’s current score.
What “lowest-rated” meant
The May 16, 2025 report compared The Final Reckoning with other films in the Mission: Impossible franchise using Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. Its 81% score from 136 reviews was an early snapshot during the review rollout. It did not mean the film was the lowest-rated movie overall, and “dethrone” did not refer to a box-office ranking.
Rotten Tomatoes’ score has since changed as more reviews were counted. The distinction matters: a dated score from a particular platform and comparison group cannot be treated as a permanent verdict or as a measure of ticket sales.
Where the Rotten Tomatoes scores stand
Rotten Tomatoes’ listing gives The Final Reckoning an 80% Tomatometer from 428 critic reviews and an 88% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings. These are separate platform aggregates: the Tomatometer reflects critics’ reviews, while the Popcornmeter reflects verified audience ratings. Both counts and scores can change.

The comparison shows the current Tomatometer snapshot for these franchise entries; it does not turn the May 2025 headline into a claim about every film or every rating service. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the film as “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope” and a “sentimental sendoff” for Ethan Hunt. That is the platform’s consensus text, not a quotation from one named critic.
How another review aggregator rates the film
Metacritic reports a 67 Metascore based on 57 critic reviews and a 6.8 user score based on 489 ratings. Those figures use Metacritic’s own aggregation and scales; they are not directly interchangeable with Rotten Tomatoes percentages.

The box-office figures—and what they do not prove
Box Office Mojo lists The Final Reckoning at $598,767,057 worldwide: $197,413,515 domestic and $401,353,542 international. It lists a $64,036,428 domestic opening, a $350 million production budget, and a rank of 151 among PG-13 lifetime grosses on the page checked.
These figures describe theatrical gross, not studio profit. The listed production budget does not include all costs or account for revenue shares and financial terms; subtracting it from worldwide gross would not establish whether the film made money. Nor do the available figures show that review scores caused the film’s box-office performance.
