April 25 is “the perfect date” because Cheryl Frasier, Miss Rhode Island, answers a pageant question about a romantic date with a date on the calendar. In the 2000 film Miss Congeniality, her explanation—“not too hot, not too cold”—turns the misunderstanding into one of the movie’s best-known jokes.
What happens in the scene?
During the pageant interview, host Stan Fields, played by William Shatner, asks Cheryl, played by Heather Burns, “Describe your perfect date.” Cheryl takes “date” to mean a day of the year rather than a romantic outing. She replies: “That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25th, because it’s not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket.” ABC News recounts the exchange in its report on the film’s April 25 tradition.
The humor comes from Cheryl answering the question literally: instead of describing a person or an evening together, she offers a calendar day and a breezy weather rationale. The line has since become an informal pop-culture observance among fans, not an official holiday.
Is April 25 actually perfect weather?
No. The light-jacket description is part of the joke, not a forecast or a promise about conditions everywhere. April weather varies by location and year.

In a 2017 TIME interview, Climate Matters Chief Meteorologist Bernadette Woods Placky discussed how warming affects the timing of spring weather. She said, “Everything is warming overall more quickly across the country. Spring days are coming much earlier,” and noted that the timing differs between northern and southern states. That dated interview provides context for the joke; it is not current local climate data or a quantified forecast.

Fans and cast members revisit the line on April 25 because the date is instantly recognizable to viewers of Miss Congeniality. ABC News reported cast members marking the occasion on April 25, 2025, the film’s 25th-anniversary year. William Shatner had also commemorated the date in 2018, as CBS News reported.

The tradition is a playful annual reference to the scene, rather than a formal celebration established by the film or an official calendar.
