What Kaling and Novak said about each other
Novak celebrated Kaling’s talent
At the ceremony, Novak joked, “This is not the Walk of Hard Work,” then said Kaling would have deserved a “Walk of Talent” star from birth. Netflix’s account of the event also quoted Kaling saying, “This is one of the times [when] I’m just going to force myself to be in the moment.”
Kaling described Novak as family
ABC News reported that Kaling called Novak “such an important and integral part of my family.” She also joked that she was “as starstruck by him now at age 29 as I was when I first met you—at 24.” Novak praised the way Kaling makes an effort to show people her personality, values, standards, style, and humor.

Their connection began on The Office
Kaling and Novak worked together on the American television series The Office. Netflix describes Novak as Kaling’s co-star and close friend. Their shared work on the show is the context for the warmth of their remarks at the ceremony: the event celebrated Kaling’s career while also spotlighting a relationship that began as a professional collaboration.

The ceremony took place in 2025, and coverage confirms that Kaling and Novak appeared together there. But the available event reports do not establish when they last appeared together in public before then. The “12 years later” framing should therefore be read as a reference to the passage of time since their The Office era, not as a verified 12-year gap between public appearances.
