Mike Tyson and Donald Trump had a long public association rooted first in boxing business, followed by repeated public expressions of support and social contact. Trump’s Atlantic City casino hosted and promoted major Tyson fights in the late 1980s. Tyson later said they were “really good friends” who went back to 1986 or 1987, but that private-friendship timeline comes from Tyson’s retrospective account rather than contemporaneous documentation. The relationship became especially controversial in 1992, when Trump argued that Tyson should fight and give money to rape victims instead of serving a six-year prison sentence after his conviction. Later reports placed Tyson at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago. The most accurate description therefore separates three things: documented business dealings, public loyalty, and an asserted personal friendship whose depth cannot be independently established from the available record.
The earliest documented connection was boxing business
The clearest starting point in the public record is Trump’s move into large-scale fight promotion in Atlantic City. Trump Plaza, his casino, became a venue for Tyson’s biggest bouts, giving both men a reason to appear together publicly and tying Tyson’s career to Trump’s commercial ambitions.
The June 1988 Tyson–Michael Spinks fight
In June 1988, Trump Plaza hosted Tyson’s heavyweight title fight with Michael Spinks. An Associated Press report carried in the Los Angeles Times archive said Trump paid $11 million to host the event and incurred another $2 million in expenses. The same report said Tyson was due a purse of at least $20 million. Those were contemporaneous reported figures, not independently audited payments.
Trump was unusually candid about the mix of motives behind the event. In an interview before the fight, he said, “Of course, my interest is also financial, but I just enjoy boxing.” That statement is important because it shows why the association began in practical terms: Tyson brought enormous attention to Trump’s casino, while Trump supplied a prominent venue and promotional platform.

The AP account described Trump predicting a $13 million live gate. That number was presented as Trump’s estimate or boast, not as a verified final result. Tyson also appeared in a commercial expressing gratitude to Trump, another sign that the relationship was being presented publicly as mutually useful. None of this, by itself, proves that the two men were close private friends.
Another Trump Plaza fight in 1989
The association continued beyond the Spinks bout. During a May 1989 appearance on Larry King Live, Trump referred to another Tyson fight coming to Trump Plaza. That comment documents continuing business activity and public familiarity. It does not, standing alone, establish when a personal friendship began or how often the men interacted away from boxing events.
Trump’s public familiarity with Tyson was visible by 1990
In October 1990, a syndicated article attributed to Trump discussed Tyson’s approach to boxing and his dealings with reporters. Trump wrote, “For most of his life there has always been another fight looming in Mike’s future, and that means there are always opponents out there thinking about Mike Tyson and listening to every word he says.” The passage shows that Trump was publicly positioning himself as someone who understood Tyson’s career and personality.
The same syndicated text discussed promoter Don King’s affection for Tyson. That point should not be misread: the article’s description of King’s relationship with Tyson does not establish that Trump shared the same private bond. Trump’s writing demonstrates familiarity and interest, but it is still a public account connected to the boxing world.

Why Trump defended Tyson after the 1992 conviction
The most consequential public intervention came after Tyson’s 1992 rape conviction. On The Late Show with David Letterman on May 21, 1992, Trump said: “Mike Tyson should fight, Mike Tyson should supply millions and millions and millions of dollars to rape victims, and I think that’s a hell of a lot better than him sitting in a jailhouse for six years.”
Trump was expressing his own view about punishment and compensation, not announcing a legal finding. His proposal treated a return to boxing and payments to victims as preferable to imprisonment. It did not overturn the conviction, establish Tyson’s innocence, or change the sentence imposed by the court. The remark drew strong criticism because it appeared to frame money and a lucrative career as an alternative to incarceration for a serious violent crime.
The statement also helps explain why the relationship remains a subject of interest. Trump was not merely discussing a fighter whose events had made him money; he was publicly advocating for Tyson at a moment when doing so was highly controversial. That is evidence of public loyalty or alignment, but it still does not reveal the full nature of their private relationship.
Tyson later described them as friends from the mid-1980s
A later account supplied the most direct claim about personal friendship. The Daily Beast, in 2026 reporting, quoted a 2016 Daily Caller interview in which Tyson said, “We’re really good friends. We go back to ’86, ’87. Most of my successful and best fights were at Trump’s hotels.”

Tyson’s wording is significant because it gives a specific personal characterization and places the relationship before the best-documented 1988 fight. It also links the friendship to the venues where Tyson had major successes. However, the date remains Tyson’s retrospective recollection. The contemporaneous material establishes a business relationship by 1988, not a privately verified first meeting in 1986 or 1987. The public record reviewed here does not identify that first meeting, describe their private routines, or independently confirm the degree of closeness Tyson claimed.
Mar-a-Lago reports show continuing public association
The association did not end with the Atlantic City fight years. In an account published in May 2026, the Daily Beast reported on Tyson’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. When asked whether he goes to Mar-a-Lago while in Florida, Tyson answered, “All the time, all the time.”
That answer supports the conclusion that Tyson has continued to appear at Trump’s Florida property. It is evidence of recent contact or access as reported by the outlet. It does not establish how frequently the visits occurred, whether Trump was present for each one, or whether Tyson currently regards Trump as a close personal friend. Those details should not be inferred from a brief television answer.
Trump’s 2019 use of a Tyson quotation
In January 2019, Axios reported that Trump used Tyson’s line, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth,” while discussing planning with an adviser. Another senior administration official confirmed that Trump used the quotation.

The episode shows that Tyson’s boxing aphorism had become a reference point in Trump’s public and political language. It does not show that Tyson was involved in the conversation, present at the meeting, or acting as a political adviser. The quotation’s use is best understood as another public sign of Trump’s familiarity with Tyson’s image and words.
How to read the evidence about their relationship
Different kinds of evidence answer different questions. A fight contract or casino promotion can establish a commercial relationship. A television interview can establish what Trump or Tyson said publicly. Neither automatically proves what happened in private.

So, were Mike Tyson and Donald Trump friends?
The careful answer is: Tyson has said they were good friends, and their long public association included business, advocacy and later social contact. Trump’s casinos hosted Tyson’s major fights, Trump publicly supported Tyson after the conviction, and later reporting placed Tyson at Mar-a-Lago. Those facts make a sustained association clear.
What cannot be stated as a verified fact is that the two were privately close from 1986 or 1987. That date comes from Tyson’s later recollection, while the contemporaneous reporting available here begins with the 1988 fight promotion. It is also too broad to treat casino events, published comments or a Mar-a-Lago visit as proof of a particular level of intimacy.

How did they meet?
The earliest clearly documented route is through professional boxing and Trump’s Atlantic City properties. Trump was promoting major fights and Tyson was the sport’s dominant heavyweight attraction. Their interests converged at Trump Plaza, where the casino gained publicity and event revenue while Tyson gained a high-profile venue.
Tyson’s claim that they went back to 1986 or 1987 may indicate that their contact began before the documented 1988 bout, but the available reports do not describe that first encounter. It is therefore more accurate to say that the public record shows them connected through boxing by 1988, while the earlier personal timeline remains Tyson’s account.
What the record does not show
- It does not provide an independently verified date for their first meeting.
- It does not document the private terms of their friendship or quantify how often they communicated away from public events.
- It does not show that Tyson participated in Trump’s political discussions or served as an adviser.

The relationship is best understood as layered rather than as a single simple friendship story. The business layer is the strongest contemporaneous evidence: Trump’s casino hosted Tyson’s fights, and Trump openly acknowledged the financial stakes. The public-loyalty layer is clearest in 1992, when Trump argued that Tyson should fight and compensate rape victims rather than serve his sentence. The personal-friendship layer comes mainly from Tyson’s later statements and reports of continued visits.
Keeping those layers separate avoids two opposite errors. It would be too narrow to describe Trump and Tyson as nothing more than a promoter and fighter, because Trump publicly defended Tyson and Tyson has repeatedly described a friendship. It would be too strong to present “friends since 1986” as a contemporaneously proven fact. The documented history supports a durable public association, while the precise private character of that association remains partly unresolved.
