Mihon is a free, open-source manga reader for Android—not an iPhone app or a manga-hosting service. At the August 16, 2026 snapshot, the official download page listed stable Mihon v0.20.4 (released August 5, 2026) for Android 8.0 and newer. There is no official iOS or iPadOS version, and Mihon’s FAQ says none is planned. Download the APK only from mihon.app or its linked official GitHub release.

The official project describes Mihon as a free, open-source manga reader for Android. It is best understood as a prominent Tachiyomi-era alternative: a customizable reader, library, downloader and tracker rather than a licensed subscription catalog. Is Mihon legitimate and safe?
The Mihon application is legitimate open-source software when obtained through official project channels. “Safe,” however, depends on what you install around it. Avoid unofficial “premium Mihon,” modified APKs, APK mirrors and anything advertised as “Mihon for iOS.” The safest download route is the project’s official download page, which links to the relevant release.
Mihon itself does not supply a catalog. Its documentation says the app hosts no content and that the project does not provide, endorse or maintain repositories or extensions. Third-party extensions can access the app and may contain malware, while sources can be unreliable, disappear or block automated access. Content legality depends on the source, rights status and your jurisdiction; Mihon does not make every item accessed through it licensed.

Why Mihon is not in Google Play
Mihon’s FAQ says it does not plan a Google Play listing because APK-based extensions conflict with Google Play’s content policy and could put the app at risk of removal. Installation therefore requires sideloading an APK. Android may ask you to allow the browser or file manager that opened the file to install unknown apps. This permission is applied per source app on newer Android versions; turn it off again if you do not intend to sideload more packages.
How to download and install Mihon on Android
- Open mihon.app/download.
- Choose the stable APK. The page also lists a nightly build (r7909 at the snapshot, released August 15, 2026), but nightly builds can contain unfinished features and stability problems.
- Open the downloaded
.apkfile. - If Android requests it, enable installation permission for the browser or file manager currently opening the APK.
- Complete the installer and choose a dedicated storage location when Mihon asks.
The official getting-started instructions are available at mihon.app/docs/guides/getting-started. Use the stable build unless you specifically need to test development changes.

What Mihon includes—and what it does not
Mihon can read local files, maintain a searchable library, track progress, download chapters for offline use, schedule library updates, apply categories and themes, and connect supported tracking services. Its reader offers configurable viewing modes, reading directions, gestures, themes, color filters and long-strip/webtoon layouts. Results still depend on the quality and encoding of each chapter.

It does not include a guaranteed catalog, customer support for third-party sites, automatic installation of extensions, or built-in live synchronization between devices. It is a control-oriented tool for readers comfortable choosing sources and managing files.
Adding sources, extensions and manga
Mihon supports local files, external repositories and manually installed extensions. Because the project provides no official extension list, independently evaluate any repository before installing it; never label an unofficial repository an “official Mihon source.”
- Open Browse and the extension or source-management area.
- Install an extension only from a repository you trust and understand.
- Open the installed source. It should appear under the Sources view.
- Use Popular, Latest or search to find a series.
- Open the series details and tap Add to library.
- Return to Library to read or download chapters.
Menu labels can change between releases, so consult the current getting-started guide if your screen differs. A broken source is not necessarily a Mihon failure: the extension, website, network, CAPTCHA or source availability may be responsible.
Library, reader and offline features
Organize and update a library
- Use categories for genres, reading queues or other groups.
- Filter unread chapters and review reading history.
- Schedule library updates rather than checking every title manually.
- Download chapters for offline reading and monitor storage use.
- Associate titles with supported tracking services.
Choose a reading style
Configure left-to-right, right-to-left, vertical and webtoon-style reading, together with page navigation, gestures, themes and color filters. Local reading and downloaded chapters make Mihon useful when connectivity is limited.

Storage setup that avoids migration problems
Mihon’s storage guidance recommends creating a top-level folder named Mihon, for example /Internal Storage/Mihon/. Select that Mihon folder itself, not one of its subfolders, and avoid Android system folders such as Documents or Downloads, which can create access problems. The folder normally contains directories such as autobackup, downloads and local. See the storage FAQ.
Scoped-storage rules can make file operations slower or less reliable, especially on some SD cards. Internal storage is the better choice when latency or permission errors become noticeable.
Back up, restore and move Mihon
Create a backup
- Open More → Data and storage.
- Select Create backup.
- Choose a safe destination for the backup file.
Depending on the options selected, a backup can contain library entries, chapter data, tracking associations, reading history, categories, app settings, extension repositories and source settings. Saved entries no longer in the library can also be included. Tracker login tokens are included only when sensitive settings are explicitly selected.
What a normal backup excludes
- Installed extensions.
- Downloaded chapter files.
- Local-source chapter files.
- Custom covers applied to entries.
Restore on a new device
- Install Mihon on the new Android device.
- Use More → Data and storage to restore a compatible backup.
- Reinstall the required extensions and sign in to tracking services again.
- Copy downloaded chapters into the new Mihon storage location.
- Open More → Settings → Advanced → Reindex downloads.
These procedures and the backup format notes are documented in Mihon’s backup guide. A backup is a library-and-settings record, not a complete clone of the installation.

Optional cloud workflow
Mihon has no built-in live cross-device synchronization. Its documentation describes using automatic backups plus a tool such as FolderSync to copy the autobackup folder to cloud storage, then restoring manually on another device. Autosync for Google Drive and Tasker are other possibilities for experienced users. This does not install extensions or automatically copy downloaded chapters, which must be synchronized separately; cloud tools may also have their own privacy, storage and subscription implications.
Moving from Tachiyomi or another fork
For an individual series, open it, use the overflow menu and choose Migrate. To migrate in batches, open Browse, select the Migrate tab near Extensions, choose the source and series, select a destination source, then choose the data to transfer. Downloaded chapters do not move with source migration. Keep the old download location until you have confirmed the new source works, then clean up files manually. Create a backup first. Mihon documents compatibility with .tachibk and .proto.gz backups across Mihon and Tachiyomi forks, although fork-specific settings may not restore completely.
Fixing Cloudflare, CAPTCHA and source failures
Sources may require a CAPTCHA, an updated WebView, cookies or a particular user agent. To complete a challenge, open Browse, select the source, tap its WebView icon, finish the CAPTCHA and close WebView with the upper-left X.

If the session loops, go to More → Settings → Advanced, then tap Clear cookies and Clear WebView data. Ensure the standard Android WebView implementation is installed and updated. Mihon’s troubleshooting documentation notes that some sites intentionally block app-based access; changing a user agent is not guaranteed to solve that. If a source still fails, use another source or a legitimate licensed service rather than treating the block as proof that Mihon itself is broken.
Mihon on iPhone and iPad
There is no official Mihon app for iOS or iPadOS, and the official FAQ says the project has no plans for one. Separate Android and iOS codebases make a port difficult. An iOS app using the Mihon name is not an official release and should be treated as potentially fraudulent. iPhone and iPad users should choose an independently evaluated iOS reader or a licensed manga service instead.
Do not confuse an app that can import a compatible backup format with an official Mihon port; compatibility does not change Mihon’s platform status.
Mihon forks and alternatives
Mihon’s endorsed-forks page lists TachiyomiJ2K, TachiyomiSY, TachiyomiAZ, Yōkai and Komikku. Their stated differences include alternative designs, exclusive features, the older Tachiyomi hamburger-menu layout, J2K-style enhancements or combinations of Mihon and TachiyomiSY features. Choose a fork for its interface or feature priorities, not on an unsupported assumption that it is automatically safer, faster or better maintained.

A local comic reader is more appropriate when you already own DRM-free CBZ, CBR or PDF files and do not need source extensions. Specific app compatibility, pricing and regional catalogs require separate verification.
Who should use Mihon?
- Good fit: Android 8.0+ readers who value open-source software, local files, offline reading, customization, library control, tracking, migration tools and the ability to choose their own sources.
- Poor fit: iPhone or iPad users; anyone requiring Google Play installation; readers who want bundled licensed manga; people expecting guaranteed source uptime, customer support or live cross-device synchronization; and anyone unwilling to evaluate extensions and manage storage.
On those criteria, Mihon is a strong Android choice for technically comfortable readers seeking a customizable, local-first library. It is not an Android/iOS app, not a content provider and not a one-click replacement for commercial manga services.
