Microsoft marked its 50th anniversary in 2025 with four nostalgic phone wallpapers inspired by Solitaire, Paint, Word, and Excel. They are sparse, dated-looking, and deliberately less polished than most modern corporate artwork—which is precisely what makes them memorable.
The wallpapers were announced on March 18, 2025, shortly before Microsoft’s founding anniversary on April 4. Microsoft described the release as a celebration of “50 years of innovation, memories, and moments.”
Microsoft’s 50th anniversary in four wallpapers
Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975. For its 50th anniversary year, the company chose a modest social-media gesture rather than a major product announcement: four phone wallpapers based on software that became part of everyday computing.

The four designs
Solitaire
Solitaire represents the casual, familiar side of Windows computing. For many users, it was the game opened during a break, a slow afternoon, or a moment of procrastination. Its inclusion turns an ordinary desktop pastime into anniversary memorabilia.
Paint
Paint evokes accessible, low-barrier creativity: quick sketches, crude shapes, colorful scribbles, and the first attempts at making something on a computer. It is not sophisticated design software, and that is part of its charm.
Word
Word connects Microsoft to school assignments, office documents, templates, formatting mistakes, and countless hours spent writing. It represents the practical, workaday side of the company’s history.
Excel
Excel brings spreadsheets, budgets, tables, formulas, and office administration into the set. Alongside Word, it represents Microsoft’s role in routine productivity rather than futuristic technology.

Why do they look so “low effort”?
“Ugly” and “low effort” are editorial judgments, not Microsoft’s official description of the wallpapers. The images appear intentionally retro, using basic graphics, awkward layouts, dated visual cues, and a low-resolution aesthetic associated with older desktop software.
That distinction matters. Low production complexity is not necessarily the same as careless design. The wallpapers seem to use anti-polish: instead of giving Microsoft’s history a glossy modern makeover, they recall the plain, utilitarian look of classic Windows-era applications.
There is no evidence that Microsoft publicly described the images as deliberately bad or explained how they were produced. The safest conclusion is that their crude appearance is an intentional-looking nostalgic choice, not proof of a failed design process.
Why the aesthetic works
The wallpapers succeed because the products are immediately recognizable. They do not rely on abstract anniversary branding. They connect the company to things people actually did on computers.

Together, the four themes cover several parts of Microsoft’s cultural footprint. Solitaire stands for casual play, Paint for accessible creativity, and Word and Excel for everyday productivity.
That makes the collection broader than a simple celebration of Windows branding. It is a reminder that Microsoft became familiar through repeated, ordinary interactions: opening a document, making a spreadsheet, drawing something in Paint, or playing a quick game.

The available reporting does not establish quantitative claims about which applications were most widely used, so it is better to describe them as broadly familiar Microsoft staples than to attach unsupported usage figures to them.

A small nostalgic gesture, not a major product launch
The wallpapers should be kept in proportion. This was a lighthearted social-media release of four phone images, not a new Windows design system, a major anniversary product, or evidence of a large formal marketing campaign.
Its significance is cultural rather than technical. Microsoft used recognizable software memories to make a milestone feel approachable. The release also reflects a wider design trend: established companies increasingly revisit their older visual language because imperfect, familiar imagery can be more emotionally effective than flawless modern branding.

Microsoft shared the wallpapers on X and invited users to download them. The most reliable approach is to locate the original Microsoft post and save the attached images directly, provided the post and attachments are still accessible.
- Open the original Microsoft post announcing the 50th-anniversary wallpapers.
- Open each image attachment at its largest available size.
- Save the image to your phone, then set it as a lock-screen or home-screen wallpaper.
The available reporting does not provide a stable official download page, direct file URLs, verified image dimensions, licensing terms, or confirmation of continued availability. It also does not establish that the images were made specifically for iPhone or Android, beyond describing them as phone wallpapers.

Be cautious with search results offering “official” copies. Avoid downloading an app, executable, or archive merely to obtain a static image, and remember that third-party mirrors may compress the artwork or bundle it with unwanted software. Phone wallpapers may also crop awkwardly on tablets or desktop monitors.
The appeal of deliberately imperfect nostalgia
Microsoft’s anniversary wallpapers work because they do not pretend the company’s past was always elegant. They celebrate the clunky, practical, and sometimes visually awkward software that became part of everyday life.
For a 50-year anniversary, that is a more interesting choice than another polished corporate montage. The wallpapers turn ordinary interfaces into cultural symbols—and prove that “bad” design can be memorable when it carries the right memories.
