Microsoft’s planned Groove Music features—visualizations, a five-band equalizer, personalized playlists and more—were reported by Thurrott on August 3, 2017, after Rafael Rivera accessed experimental functionality. The report was a hands-on look at features Microsoft appeared to be developing, not a public release announcement or a promise that they would reach every user. Groove Music’s streaming service later ended, so the story is historical rather than a guide to a current Windows setting.
What Thurrott reported in 2017
Rafael Rivera’s August 3, 2017 report described features exposed through experimental Groove Music functionality. It was not a conventional Microsoft announcement: the report did not identify a supported Windows build, a public release date, or a final list of features. The capabilities below should therefore be read as demonstrated or reported plans, not as confirmed launches.
Music visualizations: Ribbons and Dots
The experimental player included two visualization styles. Ribbons displayed animated ribbon-like forms that reacted to frequency bands in the music. Dots, internally called Dottopia, used particle-like dots moving around a central point; they changed color and could sometimes form imagery resembling album art. Each style reportedly offered multiple color schemes, with an option to keep a visualization throughout a listening session or change it after each song.

The five-band equalizer
The reported equalizer provided five frequency-band groupings, each adjustable from −12 dB to +12 dB, along with presets for listeners who did not want to tune the bands manually. Rivera did not state the bands’ center frequencies, name the presets, or give a confirmed public settings path. Nor does the report establish whether the equalizer applied beyond Groove playback; it should not be treated as a system-wide Windows audio control.
Personalized recommendations
Groove was reportedly preparing two playlists for its Recommended page: Fresh on Friday and Today’s Picks. The report described them as recommendations shaped by a listener’s preferences and listening behavior. It did not explain the recommendation model, its data sources, how often playlists would refresh, or which regions or users would qualify.

Playlist customization and automatic mixes
The planned editing tools would let users change a playlist’s title, add a short description and replace its cover art. Artwork options reportedly included taking a photo on a device with suitable hardware, choosing an existing image, or drawing and annotating with Windows Ink.

Other features mentioned
The report also mentioned possible direct sharing to Facebook and Twitter, a way to report abusive customized playlist artwork, and metadata-editing improvements. These were smaller reported possibilities; the article did not verify that they were released to users.
Did these features reach ordinary Groove users?
The 2017 report shows that Rivera could demonstrate experimental functionality and that Microsoft was reportedly working on bringing features to users. It does not verify a final public rollout for the complete feature set. Later community discussions include users asking how to access visualizations and mention archived app packages or feature flags. Those posts indicate that access was unclear or inconsistent for some people, but they are not authoritative proof that a feature never appeared in any build.

There is no verified activation path in the cited report that readers can follow today. Archived packages and unofficial instructions discussed in forums are not a supported route for installing or enabling Groove features.

Groove Music combined a local music-player component with a Microsoft streaming business. Thurrott’s Groove archive records the later end of Groove Music Pass in October 2017, retirement of the Android and iOS apps in May 2018, and the end of OneDrive music streaming in March 2019. Its Groove tag archive also indexes the subsequent “Goodbye, Groove Music” coverage. Those service changes do not mean every legacy local-playback component vanished at the same time.

Microsoft Support still refers to Groove in documentation about media components in Windows N editions, including the Media Feature Pack. That legacy mention is not evidence of an actively developed streaming service.
What Windows users can use now
Microsoft documents Windows Media Player Legacy as an optional Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature, with installation guidance for editions where it is not enabled by default. It is a separate media application, not a confirmed continuation of Groove’s proposed visualization and equalizer package. The 2017 report offers no reliable way to activate those features in current Windows.
