Microsoft confirmed on March 14, 2018, that it was discussing bringing Movies Anywhere support to its Movies & TV service. That was not yet a partnership announcement—but Microsoft joined the service in August 2018. In 2026, the practical story is different: Microsoft no longer sells new movies or TV shows, and its current support guidance treats Movies & TV as a way to watch existing purchases.
What Microsoft said in March 2018
A March 14, 2018 report by Paul Thurrott said a Microsoft spokesperson had confirmed the company was “in discussions” with Movies Anywhere about bringing the service to Microsoft Movies & TV. That established that talks were taking place; it did not confirm a deal, launch date, technical details, or which titles might qualify. Thurrott’s contemporaneous report is the source for the statement.
The distinction mattered. Microsoft had not yet joined, and readers could not infer from “in talks” that their libraries would become portable. At the time, Microsoft Movies & TV was a major digital-movie storefront outside the expanded Movies Anywhere lineup. Windows Central noted that Microsoft purchases were largely tied to Windows and Xbox playback, while Movies Anywhere offered a way to reach eligible films through connected retailers and apps. Windows Central’s report described the consumer impact, including access through the service’s iOS and Android apps.
What Movies Anywhere did—and what it did not
Movies Anywhere is a digital movie library-linking service. A customer connects accounts at participating retailers; eligible movie purchases can then appear in the libraries of other connected services. For example, a qualifying film bought through a connected retailer might also become available through another linked retailer’s app. The service reduced dependence on a single store or device ecosystem, but it was never a universal locker for every digital video purchase.

- 4K Networking: reproduce 4K videos in MP4 and you can output JPEG data in 4K resolution, to share photos from a camnera or camcorder
- Eligibility mattered: participating studios, retailers, and individual titles determined whether a movie could be linked.
- It was movie-focused: TV episodes and seasons were not automatically covered by the movie service.
- It did not mean universal playback: linking a purchase did not remove digital rights management or make every title freely downloadable and playable in any app.
- It was not a merger: Microsoft remained a retailer and playback platform, while Movies Anywhere remained a separate service requiring account linking.
The original 2018 report named Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros. as participating studios at that time. That is a historical lineup, not a current one. Movies Anywhere’s official participants page is the appropriate place to check current retailers and studios; its list is marked “As of June 8, 2026.”
Why Microsoft’s absence mattered
Without a connection to Movies Anywhere, a Microsoft movie purchase was less useful outside Microsoft’s ecosystem. A Windows or Xbox customer who bought a film through Movies & TV had fewer options for watching it in the apps and services used on other devices. Conversely, connecting Microsoft as a retailer could make eligible purchases from other participating storefronts available to Windows and Xbox users.

The appeal was not that every purchase would become an independent, permanent copy. It was that an eligible movie could be recognized across connected retailers, making a customer less dependent on any one retailer’s app. That portability depended on the title and participating accounts, so the arrangement could not promise that an entire collection—or every movie in a collection—would follow the customer.
From discussions to a completed partnership
The March report was not the end of the story. Follow-up coverage recorded the eventual integration and the earlier changes that left Microsoft outside the expanded service.

What the 2018 integration meant for customers
Once Microsoft joined, customers could link accounts and access qualifying movie purchases across participating services. A Microsoft purchase could appear in another connected retailer’s library if the title was eligible; eligible purchases from other connected retailers could likewise become available through Microsoft Movies & TV. This did not mean every item in a Microsoft account transferred.
Eligibility was the dividing line. A title’s studio and retailer participation mattered, and the benefit concerned qualifying movies—not a blanket migration of TV shows, rentals, or every format and region. Nor did the integration create a second, separately owned copy each time a title appeared in a linked library. Microsoft’s 2018 description of nearly 200,000 entertainment options was a contemporaneous catalog figure, not a current count.

What Microsoft’s withdrawal means now
Microsoft’s current support page says new movie and TV purchases are no longer available through Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, or Microsoft Store on Xbox. It says existing purchases remain accessible through the Movies & TV app on Windows and Xbox, but that purchased content cannot be directly moved to another service. That is Microsoft’s stated policy; it is not a guarantee of permanent access under every future technical or account circumstance.
Microsoft’s support guidance points people seeking new transactional video purchases toward services including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. For a current list of Movies Anywhere connections, use its participants page. Retailer and studio participation can change, and Microsoft is not listed there as a current digital retailer.

How to check an existing Microsoft purchase
- Sign in to Windows or Xbox with the Microsoft account used to buy the movie or show.
- Open the Microsoft Movies & TV app and check the purchased library.
- If an item is missing or will not play, contact Microsoft Support rather than assuming Movies Anywhere can restore or transfer it. Microsoft says purchases cannot be directly moved to another service.
- For a new digital movie purchase, check a currently supported retailer and, if cross-retailer access matters, verify the title’s eligibility on Movies Anywhere before buying.
Microsoft’s separate support article says purchased content can be downloaded to up to five associated devices, with one device removable every 30 days. Microsoft’s device-association instructions explain that limit. This is a device-management rule for downloads, not a way to transfer a purchase to another retailer.
What the headline means in hindsight
“Microsoft is in talks” was an accurate description of the March 2018 report, not proof at the time that an agreement existed. The talks did produce a partnership later that year, but the integration applied to eligible movies and did not make Microsoft’s full video catalog universally portable. With new sales ended and Microsoft absent from Movies Anywhere’s current retailer list, the 2018 deal is chiefly relevant to the history and access questions surrounding existing libraries.
