Netflix’s former ad-free Basic plan is gone. The U.S. phaseout for existing subscribers began in July 2024, and Netflix’s current U.S. help page lists Basic as discontinued. Former subscribers now need to choose an available plan, keep watching with ads, or cancel. The change is completed—not a new 2026 announcement.
What Netflix discontinued—and what it didn’t
Netflix retired its legacy Basic plan, the lower-priced option that streamed without ads. It did not eliminate every lower-cost plan: Netflix’s ad-supported tier remains available, now listed in the U.S. as Standard with ads.
These plans are not interchangeable. Netflix launched its ad-supported tier in 2022; the former Basic plan was ad-free. Netflix stopped offering ad-free Basic to new and rejoining U.S. members in 2023, while existing members could keep it temporarily. A customer who canceled and later returned generally could not restore Basic. Netflix’s 2023 shareholder letter described the initial restriction on new and rejoining members.
In January 2024, Netflix said it would begin phasing out Basic for existing members in Canada and the U.K., then expand the change. In its July 18, 2024 shareholder letter, Netflix said the next rollout would begin in the U.S. and France. U.S. customers were notified to select another plan; contemporaneous reports described notices tied to billing dates and cases where members who did not choose were moved to the ad-supported plan. The exact deadline and treatment varied, so the notice in an individual account is more reliable than assuming every subscriber had the same outcome. See Netflix’s July 2024 shareholder letter and contemporary reporting on U.S. customer notices.

Current U.S. replacement plans and prices
Netflix’s U.S. plan information, checked August 18, 2026, lists these monthly prices and features. They are standalone list prices; taxes, bundles, third-party billing, and extra-member charges can affect what an account pays. Availability and prices differ by country.
| Plan | Monthly price | Ads | Resolution | Simultaneous devices | Downloads | Notable limits or features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | Yes | 1080p | 2 | 2 supported devices; up to 15 downloads per device per calendar month | Some titles are unavailable; ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded |
| Standard | $19.99 | No | 1080p | 2 | 2 supported devices | One extra-member slot may be available |
| Premium | $26.99 | No | 4K/HDR | 4 | 6 supported devices | Up to two extra-member slots; compatible equipment required |
Features and Basic’s discontinued status are listed on Netflix’s U.S. plan information page; ad-plan restrictions and the download allowance are detailed in Netflix’s ads help page and download guidance. Monthly list-price differences: Standard costs $11 more than Standard with ads; Premium costs $7 more than Standard and $18 more than Standard with ads. Those comparisons exclude taxes, bundles, and extra-member fees. The prices reported during the 2024 rollout—including $6.99 for the ad tier and $15.49 for Standard—are historical, not current.

What changes if you choose Standard with ads
The ad plan can reduce the bill, but it is not the old Basic experience without a price change. Netflix says most movies and shows are available, but a small number are blocked by licensing restrictions. A lock icon on a title indicates it is unavailable on the current ad-supported plan; it may be a plan restriction rather than a general removal from Netflix. See Netflix’s explanation of locked titles.
- Commercial breaks appear in most shows and movies, generally before and during selected programming. Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded.
- Downloads are limited to 15 per supported device per calendar month, on up to two devices, according to Netflix’s current help information.
- Some older TVs and streaming devices may not support the ad experience if their Netflix app or software cannot be updated. Check compatibility before selecting this plan.
- Kids profiles do not currently show ads, but that does not guarantee every title is available on the ad-supported plan.
- Live events may include commercial breaks even on ad-free plans.
Netflix describes these ad-tier conditions in its ads help center. Its regional availability guidance also matters if you are outside the U.S.; plan names and availability are not universal.

Which replacement makes sense for you?
Choose Standard with ads for the lower bill
This is the least expensive current U.S. option in the plan lineup above. It suits viewers comfortable with commercial breaks, who have checked that their regular shows are available and their devices work with the ad tier. Frequent travelers should weigh the download cap against the savings.
Choose Standard to preserve ad-free viewing
Standard keeps ad-free viewing at 1080p with two simultaneous devices. It is the closest fit for a former Basic subscriber who values no ads but does not need Premium’s 4K/HDR or four-device allowance.
Rank #4
- Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup
- Super-fast startup: Start streaming channels like Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, Sling, and Hulu in a snap—just turn on your TV
- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
- Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote
Choose Premium when its extra capacity will be used
Premium offers 4K/HDR and four simultaneous devices, with compatible equipment required for the higher resolution. It may fit a larger household or one that needs the additional streams or download capacity. For a solo viewer on a 1080p screen, those added features may not justify its higher price.
Cancel or rotate subscriptions if Netflix is not worth the cost
You do not have to select one of the replacement tiers. If you watch Netflix only for a particular documentary or series, compare the value of keeping it year-round with canceling and returning when you want to watch. Netflix says members can change plans or cancel online, though billing through a provider can change which controls are available.

Check your plan, deadline, and billing arrangement
- Sign in to Netflix in a browser and open the account or membership-management page. Menu wording and available controls can vary by country, account, app version, and billing partner.
- Check the plan name, amount charged, next billing date, and any Netflix notice. If a change is pending, read its deadline and effective date rather than assuming it matches another subscriber’s notice.
- Use the plan-change option, if available, to review the choices shown for your account. Confirm the selected plan and when it takes effect.
- If Netflix is included through a mobile carrier, cable provider, or other bundle, check with that provider before changing or canceling. Bundled memberships may have different prices, plan names, and eligibility.
Netflix confirms that members can change plans or cancel online, but the account’s billing arrangement determines which options apply. If a 2026 notice appears to mention “Basic,” verify the exact plan name and who bills you; it may not refer to the completed 2024 phaseout.
Why Netflix phased out ad-free Basic
Netflix’s stated business rationale was to grow its advertising membership base and improve monetization in markets where ads were available. In its 2024 investor communication, the company linked phasing out Basic in those markets with expanding advertising membership. That explanation is in Netflix’s third-quarter 2024 shareholder letter.
The consumer trade-off is clear: people who prioritize price can accept ads and related limits, while people who prioritize ad-free viewing must pay more or leave. It is reasonable to infer that the lineup encourages price-sensitive members toward advertising and ad-averse members toward higher-priced plans, but that is an interpretation of the plan structure—not a separate stated Netflix promise.
