The confusion comes from his early design, which the Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes as more rat-like in appearance.
Why Mickey is a mouse
Disney’s D23 character entry identifies Mickey as Walt Disney’s primary cartoon character, and Disney Japan’s official character page presents him as Mickey Mouse. In other words, “mouse” is his canonical character identity—not a conclusion drawn from his appearance.
D23 dates Mickey’s debut in Steamboat Willie to November 18, 1928, at New York City’s Colony Theater. That is the date of his screen debut, distinct from the earlier idea for the character: Disney’s company history says Walt Disney came up with Mickey on his journey back to Los Angeles after losing control of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Why early Mickey can look like a rat
The resemblance is understandable. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History notes that early Mickey looked more rat-like, pointing to his long, pointy nose, black eyes, small body, spindly legs, and long tail. Those are observations about the design, not evidence that Disney identified him as a rat.

Mickey’s appearance and his character identity answer different questions: the early drawings can evoke a rat, while Disney’s character references call him a mouse. A fictional character’s visual cues do not by themselves establish a biological species classification.
A Disney comparison: Mortimer Mouse
In its account of the 1936 short Mickey’s Rival, D23 identifies Mortimer as a mouse, despite his different look. D23 notes traits including a pointier nose, whiskers, and long teeth. The example shows why appearance alone can be a poor guide to a cartoon character’s named identity.

What Walt Disney said about the mouse
D23 attributes this line to Walt Disney: “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” The entry does not give an occasion or date for the quotation, so it is best read as a sentiment about Mickey’s importance, not as a zoological statement.
