Movies like Mickey 17 to watch this weekend
These ten picks are grouped by what you might want from a follow-up: repeated deaths, questions of identity, survival in space, or dystopian satire. The comparisons are about story and tone, not a claim that every film is available on HBO Max or any single service. Check the streaming listings for your country before settling on a double feature. The titles appear in JustWatch’s guide to movies like Mickey 17.
For repeated-death sci-fi
- Edge of Tomorrow (2014): A time-loop premise turns repeated deaths into a faster-paced action story.
- Happy Death Day (2017): A woman relives the day she is killed, with a lighter, darker-comic take on the loop.
For cloning and identity
- Moon (2009): A lunar worker encounters a possible double in an intimate mystery about identity.
- Never Let Me Go (2010): A quieter dystopian drama about clones, their lives, and their autonomy.
- The Island (2005): A more action-driven thriller follows residents who begin questioning the account of the enclosed world they inhabit.
- They Cloned Tyrone (2023): Eccentric comedy meets a conspiracy involving cloning.
- Oblivion (2013): Action and science fiction build toward a mystery about identity.
For space survival and Robert Pattinson
- High Life (2018): Also starring Pattinson, this bleak space-survival story follows people on a dangerous mission and explores expendability.
For dystopian social satire and Bong Joon Ho
- Snowpiercer (2013): Bong Joon Ho’s post-apocalyptic train society frames a story about class inequality.
- Okja (2017): Another Bong Joon Ho film, mixing offbeat science fiction with questions of exploitation and experimentation.
How to choose your next film
For a brisker, action-led follow-up, start with Edge of Tomorrow or The Island. For more contemplative stories about who counts as a person, try Moon or Never Let Me Go. High Life leans into bleak space survival, while Snowpiercer and Okja are natural choices if you want more of Bong Joon Ho’s genre-mixing and social critique.
