‘Mickey 17’ Review: Robert Pattinson Dies. Again, and Again, and Again

Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 turns Robert Pattinson’s repeated deaths into dark comedy about replaceable labor, though its escalating premise can tip into narrative excess.

Mickey 17 turns a disposable worker’s repeated deaths into a science-fiction black-comedy premise, with Robert Pattinson at its center. The idea is instantly legible and built for dark jokes; the critical question is whether the film’s repetitions sharpen its satire or get swallowed by the excess around them. The reviews available here point to both outcomes: the Associated Press praises Pattinson and the invention of the death scenarios, while RogerEbert.com emphasizes their grotesque, banal quality. The AP also finds the story increasingly chaotic and overstuffed.

What is Mickey 17 about?

Written and directed by Bong Joon Ho, the film follows Mickey Barnes, played by Pattinson, on a space-colony mission. Mickey has signed on as an “Expendable”: when a dangerous assignment kills him, he is reprinted and sent back to work. The title’s number marks an iteration of Mickey, not a statistic or a count of the film’s deaths.

That arrangement gives the story a sharp comic contradiction. Mickey’s labor is treated as replaceable, but the person doing it keeps returning. Each death can produce a new piece of macabre comedy; the larger premise also asks what it means to treat a human being as equipment that can simply be reissued.

Does Robert Pattinson make the repeated incarnations work?

The conceit depends on Pattinson doing more than reacting to increasingly dangerous work. Mickey has to remain recognizable as one person while the story makes his repeated returns feel consequential rather than like a reset button. The Associated Press review singles out Pattinson’s performance as a strength, suggesting that the actor helps anchor the film’s elaborate premise.

That praise matters because the setup could easily reduce Mickey to a delivery system for one more death gag. Pattinson’s role is the film’s human counterweight: the spectacle is funny only if the worker being expended remains more than an expendable resource.

Are the deaths inventive—or does the joke wear thin?

The Associated Press praises the creativity of the death scenarios, while RogerEbert.com describes the deaths as both grotesque and banal. Those reactions describe two sides of the same device. The deaths can be surprising in their details, but their repetition also makes them ordinary within Mickey’s working life. That contrast is fertile territory for black comedy, though it risks turning escalation into an end in itself.

The AP’s central reservation is that the film devolves into narrative chaos, bloat, and excess. In other words, a premise that can support a string of audacious comic incidents may not, by itself, keep every narrative turn equally focused. The film’s challenge is to make repetition accumulate meaning, not merely volume.

What is the film’s satire aimed at?

The most promising target is a system that can call a worker expendable and then make that disposability literal. Mickey’s dangerous job is not an incidental bit of science-fiction machinery: it is the condition that allows the film to turn labor, risk, and personhood into comedy. His repeated return makes the arrangement look absurd, but it also exposes the premise’s cold logic: if a worker can be replaced, the institution has less reason to protect him.

That satirical reading is an interpretation of the setup, not a guarantee that every part of the film develops it with equal force. The AP’s complaint about excess points to a possible tension: a film can have a clear target and still let its detours blur the aim. Whether the satire feels pointed or overextended will depend on how much weight a viewer gives the premise compared with the film’s escalating comic chaos.

How does the film compare with the novel?

Mickey 17 is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7. The titles are distinct: the film is Mickey 17, while the book is Mickey7. The adaptation’s premise makes the repeated-death device central to its identity, but the information available here does not establish specific changes between the novel and the film. A detailed claim about what the adaptation adds, removes, or alters would need a direct comparison of both works.

Release and viewing context

The film’s release was staggered by territory: Screen International reported openings in South Korea on February 28, 2025, the United States on March 7, and the United Kingdom on April 18. Those are territory-specific dates, not one universal opening date. Warner Bros. announced an exclusive start on Max on May 23, 2025; that dated announcement does not establish the film’s current availability in any particular country.

The Associated Press reports an R rating, citing violent content, language throughout, sexual content, and drug material. That rating information is from the AP review, not a substitute for checking the classification in a viewer’s region.

Verdict

Mickey 17 has a strong engine for dark comedy: a worker is killed on the job, reprinted, and expected to carry on. Pattinson’s performance and the inventiveness of the death scenarios are the clearest strengths identified by the cited reviews. The counterweight is a story that the AP finds chaotic and excessive, a weakness that matters especially when repetition is also the film’s main source of comic and satirical force. The result, on the available critical evidence, is an intriguing premise with real comic potential—and a risk that its escalating machinery can overwhelm its point.
