Mick Foley’s best rivalries were about more than spectacular punishment. The Undertaker made one match an enduring legend; Triple H put Foley’s WWE career on the line; and Randy Orton shared a comeback that Foley believed benefited them both. This ranking weighs career impact, the stakes and quality of defining matches, Foley’s own reflections, and what each program did for his opponent. It distinguishes sustained rivalries from shorter, match-centered programs.

Foley’s changing personas—Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love—gave those stories very different textures, from hardcore brutality to unsettling vulnerability and comedy. The order below is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking.

1. The Undertaker: the fall that became a defining image

At King of the Ring on June 28, 1998, Mankind faced The Undertaker in Hell in a Cell. Foley’s fall from the top of the structure became one of wrestling’s most widely remembered images, but reducing their rivalry to that stunt misses the match’s lasting power—and Foley’s more complicated view of it.

In WWE’s oral history, Foley said, “I disagree with people who say that it’s the greatest match of all time. There were far greater matches. It may be the most compelling of all time.” He also described the fall as a moment that was “impossible to top” and “shouldn’t be topped.” That distinction matters: the spectacle was unforgettable, but Foley did not present it as proof that the match was wrestling’s greatest. WWE’s account notes that fans still ask him, “Did it hurt going through that table?” ( WWE oral history of Foley’s fall.)

The match is the anchor of this rivalry because it joined Foley’s willingness to put his body at risk with The Undertaker’s role as a formidable opponent. Its cultural afterlife is inseparable from both men, not simply from the mechanics of the fall.

2. Triple H: a rivalry with Foley’s career at stake

The 1998 encounter

The Foley–Triple H story developed across two stages. In 1998, Cactus Jack met Triple H at No Way Out, establishing the contrast between Foley’s rough, unpredictable brawler and an opponent whose rise would become central to WWE’s main-event picture.

The 2000 Street Fight and Hell in a Cell

The rivalry’s defining chapter came at the 2000 Royal Rumble in a Street Fight, followed by a career-versus-title Hell in a Cell at No Way Out. Foley lost the latter match, ending his WWE in-ring career at that point. The consequence made this more than a violent showcase: the story placed his future in the company directly against Triple H’s championship ambition. WWE’s event account documents the No Way Out 2000 main event.

3. Randy Orton: Foley’s comeback becomes Orton’s breakthrough

Foley returned to the ring for a hardcore match with Randy Orton at Backlash 2004, after a program WWE describes as nearly a year in the making. The match is often framed as a major step in Orton’s rise; that “starmaking” description is WWE’s characterization, rather than a neutral measure of his career.

Foley called it his comeback match and emphasized that it worked for both performers: “Best case scenario for a match is when everybody benefits.” That assessment helps explain why the program ranks so highly. It gave Foley a consequential return while presenting Orton as a wrestler who could endure and answer Foley’s punishing style. WWE’s retrospective covers the match and Foley’s comments in “Dirty Dozen: Mick Foley’s 12 Wildest Matches”.

4. The Rock: rivalry, partnership and comic chemistry

Foley and The Rock could be opponents, uneasy partners or outright comic foils. Their Rock ’n’ Sock Connection pairing showed a different side of Foley’s range: Dude Love and Mankind could make room for humor and unlikely teamwork as well as brutality. Their interaction was not a single, neatly bounded feud, but a run of stories whose tone shifted with the characters.

WWE says their interactions brought Raw some of its highest television ratings ever, but gives no numerical ratings figure or date for that claim. It is best read as WWE’s qualitative assessment, not as a specific ratings record. The pairing and its broader context are included in WWE’s Mick Foley biography.

5. Edge: a hardcore match leads to an uneasy alliance

Foley’s program with Edge culminated in their hardcore match at WrestleMania 22, a late-career collision that brought Foley’s Cactus Jack identity and the violence associated with it into focus. The story did not end at WrestleMania: at ECW One Night Stand 2006, Foley turned and joined Edge against Terry Funk and Tommy Dreamer.

That shift makes this more than a one-match entry. Foley’s turn recast him from the battered, familiar hardcore figure into an ally of a younger star, complicating the audience’s expectations of both men. WWE’s bio and wildest-match retrospective document the Edge and Foley storyline context and the match highlights.

6. Terry Funk: a hardcore rivalry shaped by mutual respect

Foley’s relationship with Terry Funk crossed generations and blurred the line between rivalry and influence. One landmark meeting was their January 8, 1995 IWA Japan Barbed Wire Bunkhouse match. Foley later said he was proud of that bout, an unusually personal endorsement of a match whose appeal rests as much on its extremity as on its place in his development.

Funk’s influence also reached Foley’s most famous match with The Undertaker: Foley said Funk helped him plan the opening sequence on top of the cell. Their connection therefore matters both as a rivalry in its own right and as part of the making of another defining moment. WWE recounts the Japan match in its wildest-match retrospective and Funk’s role in the Hell in a Cell oral history.

7. Vader: Cactus Jack wins sympathy against overwhelming force

In WCW, Cactus Jack’s program with Vader showed how Foley could draw audience sympathy without being presented as a conventional underdog. Vader’s physical presence made him a credible threat; Foley’s willingness to absorb punishment made the conflict feel dangerous. WWE’s retrospective points to their April 17, 1993 WCW Saturday Night match and Foley’s account of how audiences responded.

The available WWE account supports calling this a notable WCW rivalry or program, rather than claiming a fully documented chronology of every encounter. Its significance here is the contrast between Vader’s imposing force and the vulnerability Foley built into Cactus Jack. See WWE’s retrospective of Foley’s wildest matches.

8. Shawn Michaels: Mankind against a polished technician

Foley’s 1996–97 Mankind program with Shawn Michaels offered a useful contrast in style and character: the unsettling, unpredictable Mankind opposite a technically polished performer. It belongs on a list of notable Foley programs because of that contrast, but the WWE material cited here does not establish enough chronology or a defining result to support a detailed rivalry history.

That limit is important: this entry recognizes the program’s character dynamic without presenting it as a sustained feud on the same documented footing as Foley’s rivalries with The Undertaker or Triple H.

9. The Nasty Boys: a memorable WCW tag-team program

At Spring Stampede 1994, Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne challenged The Nasty Boys for the WCW tag team titles in a Chicago Street Fight. Foley’s reflections on the match include personal context, making it more than a generic entry in a list of violent bouts. Still, the documented evidence centers on this notable program and match, not on a long-running feud.

It earns a place for showing Foley’s ability to make a tag-team story feel personal and physical. WWE recounts the match in its wildest-match retrospective.

10. Ric Flair and Evolution: the WrestleMania XX prelude

At WrestleMania XX, Foley and The Rock faced Evolution in a handicap match. Ric Flair was part of Evolution, and the match provides a useful prelude to Foley’s later program with Randy Orton. Foley was disappointed with his own performance, according to WWE’s retrospective; that candid reaction complicates the temptation to treat every high-profile appearance as a triumph.

This is best understood as a short, consequential setup rather than a standalone, sustained Foley–Flair feud. Its place on the list comes from its connection to the Orton story and its role in a major ensemble match. WWE’s account appears in its retrospective.

What makes Foley’s best rivalries distinctive

Foley’s strongest programs did not all work the same way. The Undertaker match made a moment into legend; Triple H’s rivalry turned a championship match into a career decision; Orton’s program joined Foley’s return to a younger wrestler’s rise. The Rock partnership and Edge alliance, meanwhile, depended on character turns and shifts in tone as much as on a single result.

That range is why a list of Foley’s best feuds cannot be only a list of his most punishing matches. His personas made room for fear, humor, resilience and reinvention—and the rivalries that endure are the ones where those qualities changed the meaning of the match or the people involved.
