The headline “Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Pushed to October 2025” describes an earlier stage of the schedule, not the film’s current status. Lionsgate later announced an April 24, 2026 theatrical launch, and the film had opened by April 2026. Japan had a separate June 12, 2026 release date.
When did Michael come out?
Lionsgate’s November 8, 2025 announcement set April 24, 2026 as the film’s worldwide theatrical start. By October 8, 2026, that date had passed: the film had already opened, according to the Associated Press’s opening-weekend report. The October 2025 date is obsolete, so it should not be read as a future release date.

What does the film cover?
The official synopsis presents a story that follows Jackson from the discovery of his talent as lead of the Jackson 5 into his solo career, including his life away from the stage and early solo performances. Lionsgate names Antoine Fuqua as director, John Logan as writer, and Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain as producers. Jaafar Jackson plays Michael Jackson; the announced cast also includes Nia Long, Juliano Valdi, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo. Lionsgate’s release announcement and Sony Music’s soundtrack announcement provide those production and cast details.
Where the released story ends
The Associated Press reported on April 26, 2026, that the released film concludes in 1988, before the allegations discussed in AP’s production coverage. AP said the third act had originally focused on Jordan Chandler, and that a substantial portion was cut and reshot after the estate settlement terms barred mention of Chandler in a movie. That is AP’s account of the production and settlement; it should not be treated here as an independently verified legal finding. AP’s opening-weekend report discusses the changes.

How to understand the controversy
AP’s coverage notes allegations of child sexual abuse, Jackson’s and his estate’s denials, and his acquittal in his sole criminal trial in 2005. Those are distinct facts: allegations are not a criminal conviction, denials are not a judicial finding, and the acquittal concerns the criminal trial. The film’s narrative endpoint also means its story does not cover the later allegations; its promotional synopsis is not a complete account of them.
What was the film’s opening and early reception?
AP estimated the opening weekend at $97 million in the United States and Canada and $217.4 million globally in its April 26, 2026 report. These are opening-weekend estimates, not final lifetime grosses. In the same report, AP cited a 38% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A- CinemaScore. The Rotten Tomatoes figure is a snapshot from that date and may change as reviews are added.

Lionsgate’s November 2025 release announcement said the teaser drew 116.2 million global views in its first 24 hours, citing WaveMetrix. Lionsgate described that company-reported promotional metric as the largest 24-hour trailer debut in its history and for a music biopic; it is not an independently recalculated measure. Lionsgate’s announcement gives the attribution.
