The moment connected three actors and two very different Batman films—but reporting on the exchange does not establish which “decades-old DC movie debate” it reignited, or show that it reignited one at all.
What happened when DeVito and Schwarzenegger saw Michael Keaton?
During the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024, presenters Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger joked about their Batman-villain roles, then spotted Keaton in the audience. DeVito called out, “There he is! He’s right here!” and joked, “He threw me out a window!” Schwarzenegger addressed Keaton with, “You have a lot of nerve to show your face tonight.” Keaton gestured back playfully, according to TheWrap’s account of the exchange.
Which Batman films were they referencing?
| Actor | Batman role | Film connection |
|---|---|---|
| Danny DeVito | The Penguin | Batman Returns (1992), in which he faced Keaton’s Batman. |
| Arnold Schwarzenegger | Mr. Freeze | Batman & Robin (1997), opposite George Clooney’s Batman. |
| Michael Keaton | Batman / Bruce Wayne | Starred in Tim Burton’s Batman films and returned as the character in The Flash (2023). |
The role and film connections are reported by TheWrap and Variety Australia/New Zealand. The joke worked because DeVito’s and Schwarzenegger’s villains came from different Batman eras and faced different actors as the hero.
What “decades-old DC movie debate” did the moment reignite?
The available reports do not identify a particular debate or establish that the exchange reignited one. The bit itself was a gag about the actors’ fictional history, not a stated argument over which Batman film, actor, or version of the character is best. It would be speculation to assign it a specific meaning or claim it reflects a measured audience response.

There are several possible comparisons a reader might have in mind—Keaton versus Clooney, Burton’s films versus later Batman movies, or Bruce Wayne’s characterization versus Batman’s. Those are distinct questions, and the Oscars exchange does not answer them. Nor do the reports provide representative polling or other evidence that one screen version is generally preferred.

In an interview reported by TheWrap, Keaton said: “It was always Bruce Wayne. It was never Batman.” He went on to describe the character and films as iconic, crediting Tim Burton with making them artistically iconic as well. That offers Keaton’s perspective on his own approach; it was not presented as a response to a debate during the Oscars exchange.

Keaton’s return in The Flash brought his Batman back to the screen in 2023, as Variety noted. His Oscars appearance made that earlier film history part of the joke, but the exchange did not announce or confirm any future project.

What the moment tells us—and what it doesn’t
- It connects specific roles: DeVito’s Penguin and Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze were invoked in a joke directed at Keaton.
- It revisits a recognizable screen history: Their characters came from films starring different actors as Batman, while Keaton had also returned to the role in The Flash.
- It does not settle a ranking: The reports establish the exchange and its film references, not a verdict on which Batman is best or a renewed public dispute.
