In My Hero Academia, the classification reference commonly used to explain Quirks groups them into three primary classes: Emitter, Transformation, and Mutant. It treats Accumulation as a subtype, not a fourth class on the same level. That distinction explains why some lists appear to name four categories.
What a Quirk is in the story
The official My Hero Academia anime glossary defines a Quirk as a supernatural ability manifested in humans. It says Quirks usually appear by about age four, may be inherited from one or both parents or emerge as a combination, and belong to about 80% of the fictional world’s population. That figure describes the series’ world, not real-world people.
Shueisha’s official series page identifies Kohei Horikoshi as the creator and describes a setting where supernatural abilities called Quirks are widespread. The categories below are a practical way to describe how a Quirk works, rather than a complete account of its history, limits, or every effect.
The three primary Quirk classes
The classification overview at the My Hero Academia Wiki describes three main classes. Use the ability’s principal mode of operation—not simply what a character looks like—to decide which class best fits.

| Class | Practical test | What it describes | Examples in the overview |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emitter | Does the ability produce or control an effect, or alter something beyond the user’s body? | An effect generated or manipulated outside the body. The ability may require deliberate activation. | Electrification, Explosion, and Half-Cold Half-Hot |
| Transformation | Does using the ability temporarily change the user’s body? | A bodily alteration that occurs under activation conditions or for a limited time. It may add, remove, or enhance features. | Transform and Foldabody |
| Mutant | Is a bodily trait permanently part of the user and connected to the Quirk? | An enduring physical modification, such as an extra appendage, that can be part of how the Quirk functions. | The overview discusses permanent traits and extra appendages; it does not give a specific named example in the cited excerpt. |
Emitter: the effect reaches outward
Emitter is the best fit when the defining action is producing, controlling, or changing an effect beyond the user’s body. A visible bodily feature does not rule this class out if the Quirk’s central function is an outward effect.
Transformation: the body changes temporarily
Transformation describes a Quirk that alters the user’s own body when activated. The change is temporary, although its exact conditions and duration depend on the individual Quirk.

Mutant: a lasting physical trait
Mutant describes permanent bodily traits associated with a Quirk. Those traits may be both visible and functional. A Mutant Quirk can also have an outward effect or another function, so the categories are not always cleanly separated by appearance alone.
Why some lists say there are four types
The discrepancy comes from mixing classification levels. In the cited overview, Emitter, Transformation, and Mutant are the three primary classes; Accumulation is listed among subtype terms that can apply across those classes. So “four Quirk types” is misleading if it places Accumulation alongside the three main classes as an equivalent fourth category.

This distinction is based on a secondary fan-maintained reference, not a full taxonomy reproduced in the official anime glossary. The official glossary establishes what Quirks are and gives franchise terminology, but the retrieved official material does not provide a complete lesson defining all three classes. Treat the three-class framework as an attributed classification summary rather than a creator quote or a claim that every Quirk fits one box without overlap.
How to classify a Quirk without relying on appearance
- Identify the main action. Ask whether the Quirk primarily creates or controls an external effect, or changes the user’s own body.
- Check whether a bodily change is temporary or permanent. A temporary change points toward Transformation; an enduring physical trait points toward Mutant.
- Allow for overlap. A permanent trait may coexist with an outward or transformation-like function. Choose the label that describes the Quirk’s principal mode, and note the other function rather than forcing a false either-or.
- Keep subtype labels separate. Accumulation belongs on a different level in the cited framework; it should not be counted as a fourth primary class.
Quirk mechanics are not the same as class labels
The official glossary’s entry on One For All describes mechanics: the ability to stockpile power and the ability to transfer it combined, passed from holder to holder; the entry also notes that Izuku can use abilities of earlier holders. That account explains how a particular Quirk works and developed. It is not a definition of the three broad classes, which answer a different question: what is the Quirk’s main mode of operation?
