No: Meta says it is not giving up on VR. It is separating Horizon Worlds from its Quest VR platform: Meta’s March 2026 transition notice said Worlds access through Quest would end after June 15, 2026, with Worlds available through the Meta Horizon mobile app. Meta says Quest, its standalone apps and investment in VR will continue. The June date has passed, so current access may depend on the app and account experience now available.
What is changing?
Meta is pursuing two distinct strategies. It says Quest will focus on third-party apps and games, while Horizon Worlds will shift to an almost exclusively mobile focus, including investment in mobile creation tools and social games. In its 2026 announcement, Meta said it was separating the platforms to give each a more focused strategy.
The practical distinction is the device and format: Worlds is moving to mobile, while Quest remains Meta’s VR platform for standalone apps and games. Meta’s March 2026 notice said standalone VR apps on Quest would not be affected by the Worlds transition. Meta’s transition notice set out the timetable.
What happened to Horizon Worlds on Quest?
Meta announced a staged transition in March 2026. These dates have elapsed; the notice describes the announced schedule, not a live confirmation of what every user can access today.

- By March 31, 2026: Horizon Worlds and Events would stop appearing in the Quest Store.
- After June 15, 2026: remaining VR access to Worlds would end, and the Horizon Worlds app would be removed from Quest.
- After the transition: Meta said Worlds would be available through the Meta Horizon mobile app. Standalone Quest VR apps would remain unaffected.
For current availability, check the Meta Horizon app and your account rather than assuming the announced cutoff describes every present-day experience.
Why is Meta moving Worlds away from the Quest Store?
Meta cited developer feedback and its own experiments. At GDC 2026, it said developers disliked having Worlds placed in the Quest Store, and that its data had not shown the placement improved device retention; Meta described the impact on app revenue as small. These are Meta’s stated findings and rationale. They do not independently demonstrate that the new separation will improve retention, revenue or user experience. What does Meta say about VR’s future?
Meta says its roadmap for future VR headsets remains robust and that its investment in Quest and VR games remains high. Its announced Worlds shift is therefore not, by itself, an announcement that Quest VR is ending. Meta’s VP of Content for Reality Labs, Samantha Ryan, described the strategy as “doubling down on the VR developer ecosystem while shifting the focus of Worlds to be almost exclusively mobile.” Ryan’s statement, “Our Renewed Focus in 2026,” lays out that distinction.
Meta also cited ecosystem figures to support its stated direction. They are company-reported numbers, not independent measures of market performance:

- Meta said Quest usage reached its highest level to date in 2025.
- Meta reported that 86% of effective time in VR headsets across first- and third-party apps was spent in third-party apps.
- Meta said more than 100 Quest titles generated at least $1 million in gross revenue in 2025, and Quest in-app purchase revenue increased 13% that year.
- For Worlds, Meta reported more than 2,000 mobile-only worlds in 2025, up from zero, and mobile monthly active users growing more than fourfold during the year.
- Meta said four creators reached $1 million in lifetime revenue and nearly 100 earned six figures in 2025. These figures do not establish what a typical creator can earn.
The figures indicate what Meta says is happening across its ecosystem; they do not establish that mobile Worlds will succeed or predict future VR demand.

For Quest owners
The announced change concerns Horizon Worlds, not all Quest software. Meta said standalone VR apps would remain unaffected. If your interest is Worlds specifically, the announced route after the Quest transition is the Meta Horizon mobile app; if you use Quest for other standalone apps or games, Meta did not include those in this change.

For Worlds creators and developers
Meta’s stated emphasis is mobile creation tools and social games for Worlds, alongside third-party developer support and app discovery for Quest. That signals different distribution and development priorities, but the announcements do not establish which platform will reach a larger audience, deliver better creator outcomes or prove more successful.
