Valerie Bertinelli’s “three-week rule” was a personal agreement with her boyfriend in 2024: they tried not to go more than three weeks without seeing each other. The couple were dating long distance, with Bertinelli in Los Angeles and her boyfriend, writer Mike Goodnough, based on the East Coast at the time.

What was Valerie Bertinelli’s three-week rule?

Bertinelli described the arrangement in an interview reported by Fox News on April 4, 2024. She said the couple did not want more than three weeks to pass between visits.

“We never go longer than that without seeing each other,” Bertinelli said. She added, “After all, it’s about finding the joy in life and sharing it.”

The three-week interval was their mutual plan for managing the distance. It was not presented as a professional dating guideline, a statistic or a proven formula for relationship success.

How Bertinelli and her boyfriend met

According to the April 2024 report, Bertinelli and Goodnough first connected on social media after he commented on one of her Instagram posts. They continued talking, and Bertinelli said their connection grew after their first phone call in January.

They met in person for the first time during a trip to New York City in March 2024. At that point, Bertinelli was living in Los Angeles while Goodnough was based on the East Coast, making regular visits a central part of the relationship.

Why the schedule mattered for a long-distance couple

The rule gave the pair a specific limit for planning visits despite living in different regions. Rather than leaving meetings open-ended, they agreed to keep the gap below three weeks when their work and travel calendars allowed it.

That approach reflected this couple’s circumstances only. The reporting did not establish that three weeks was the best interval for long-distance relationships, or that following it improved a couple’s odds of staying together.

Did they keep following the three-week rule?

People coverage reported in July 2024 that Bertinelli said maintaining the arrangement had become challenging because her summer schedule was full. The report described difficulty keeping the cadence, not a change to a universal relationship principle.

A later People report, surfaced through Yahoo, said Bertinelli and Goodnough split after about ten months of dating. Available reporting did not establish that the travel schedule or the three-week agreement caused the breakup.

Is Valerie Bertinelli still with that boyfriend?

No. The later report said the relationship ended after approximately ten months. The “three-week rule” therefore referred to a past relationship and should not be described as a current arrangement. Bertinelli’s relationship status after that breakup was not established by the reporting used here.

What the “rule” did—and did not—mean

  • It meant: Bertinelli and her boyfriend aimed to meet in person at least once within every three-week period.
  • It reflected: a mutual scheduling choice in a long-distance relationship.
  • It did not mean: that relationship experts endorsed three weeks as an ideal limit.
  • It did not prove: that the arrangement guaranteed compatibility or prevented a breakup.
