Meta and Spotify’s music-sharing feature is no longer just a leaked experiment. First spotted in August 2024, the integration was officially announced by Spotify on August 21, 2025. It lets Instagram users publish an opt-in Note showing what they are currently listening to on Spotify, while also supporting direct song sharing and audio previews in Stories.
The feature was announced for Android and iOS worldwide, although app versions, account rollout, licensing rights and regional availability can still affect what individual users see.

What was discovered in 2024?
In August 2024, app reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi found an unreleased Instagram option labelled “Share from Spotify.” The accompanying wording suggested that users would be able to continuously share what they were listening to and stop sharing whenever they wanted.
Contemporaneous reports described the discovery as evidence of development, not a confirmed product. The findings included a screenshot and app-level clues, including a Spotify-related iOS framework reportedly present in Instagram. Neither Meta nor Spotify had announced the feature at the time, so cancellation remained possible.

That uncertainty is now historical. Spotify subsequently confirmed that the integration had become a public Instagram feature.

What launched?
Spotify’s August 21, 2025 announcement described three related but distinct ways to share music through Instagram:

Spotify said the rollout was global on Android and iOS. That does not mean every account will necessarily show every option: both apps may need updating, account-level rollout can differ, and music catalog or preview availability can depend on local licensing.

How to share your current Spotify listening in an Instagram Note
- Open Instagram and begin creating a Note.
- Tap the music symbol in the Note composer.
- Choose “Share from Spotify.”
- If Spotify is already playing, Instagram can use the current track for the Note.
- If nothing is playing, Spotify says the Note can update with the next song played within approximately 30 minutes.
- Add text if you want to provide context.
- Check the Note’s audience and tap Share.
The exact account-linking screen can vary. Spotify says users may be prompted to authorize the connection, link accounts through Instagram’s Settings > App website permissions, or tap a Spotify song shared in a Reel, Story or Note and select Add.
A person viewing the Note can respond through Instagram and, according to Spotify, add the shared song directly to their Spotify Liked Songs.
Real-time sharing is not full Spotify streaming inside Instagram
The word “real-time” is easy to overinterpret. This integration shares listening information; it does not broadcast an entire Spotify session through Instagram.

Instagram can show the current or next Spotify track in a Note, but that does not mean followers automatically hear every song in full, receive Spotify playback controls or get an Instagram-based replacement for the Spotify app. The audio-preview functionality announced by Spotify applies specifically to supported songs shared to Instagram Stories and should not be generalized to Notes.

Who can see an Instagram music Note?
Instagram Notes are temporary status updates that appear at the top of the messaging inbox and above a user’s profile picture. Instagram’s help material says they remain visible for up to 24 hours.
Notes are audience-limited rather than automatically public to every Instagram user. Instagram originally described sharing them with followers the user follows back or with Close Friends, while current audience controls and labels may vary by account and app version. Check the selected audience before publishing a listening Note.

Because a Note can reveal both music preferences and the time someone is listening, continuous sharing is worth treating as a privacy choice. It is opt-in, not something Spotify users are required to enable. Remove or disable the music-sharing Note using the controls shown in Instagram when you no longer want the activity displayed.

What to try if “Share from Spotify” is missing
The feature may be officially available while still failing to appear for a particular account. Try the following:
- Update both Instagram and Spotify from the relevant app store.
- Confirm that you are using the mobile apps on Android or iOS.
- Open the Instagram Notes composer rather than the standard Story or Reel composer.
- Check whether Instagram is asking you to authorize or link Spotify.
- Start playback in Spotify, then return to Instagram and check the music options again.
- Try sharing a Spotify track to an Instagram Story, then use the available Add or linking prompt.
- Allow for account-level rollout, regional licensing differences and temporary app bugs.
Instagram Notes are not available on Meta Quest devices. Also, integration availability and song availability are separate issues: the connection may work even when a particular track or Story preview is unavailable in your market.

Music discovery increasingly happens through social feeds, messages and temporary posts rather than only through dedicated music-app searches. For Spotify, a Note creates a simpler path from a friend’s listening activity to a song save or future discovery. For Instagram, it adds another reason for users to interact with Notes and gives music a more direct connection to Spotify’s catalog.

Instagram had already offered music-related sharing in Notes and other formats, while Spotify had supported sharing to Instagram and other platforms. The Spotify integration automates part of that process: instead of manually finding a song in Instagram’s catalog or copying a Spotify link, users can connect their listening activity directly to a Note.

Alternatives to real-time Instagram sharing
- Manual Spotify-to-Instagram sharing: Choose one song and share it without exposing ongoing listening activity.
- Instagram’s native music tools: Add music from Instagram’s licensed catalog to a Story, Reel or Note when the relevant track is available.
- Spotify Messages: Send recommendations privately within Spotify and start conversations with friends or groups. Spotify supports group messages of up to 10 people.
- Blends, Jams and collaborative playlists: Use Spotify’s shared-listening and collaborative features when the goal is participation rather than a temporary status signal.
- TikTok sharing: Share Spotify music through video, Photo Mode, green-screen posts or TikTok messages when visual discovery is more useful.

The August 2024 report was a genuine early look at a feature that had not yet been confirmed. By August 2025, it had become an official integration. Today, Instagram and Spotify users can use Notes to share current listening activity, post individual tracks and, in supported Story cases, include audio previews.
Its practical purpose is music discovery and lightweight social sharing—not continuous audio broadcasting. Availability remains dependent on updated apps, account and regional conditions, licensing and Instagram’s audience controls.
