Met Gala 2025 Red Carpet Photos: The Best, Most Divisive and Least On-Theme Looks

The strongest looks at the 2025 Met Gala treated tailoring as a language of identity rather than a uniform. Ayo Edebiri turned a reference to her father’s dandy style into a modern Ferragamo silhouette; Diana Ross made family legacy the centerpiece of an extraordinary train; and Zendaya, Lewis Hamilton, Rihanna and Colman Domingo showed how precision, spectacle and personal image could all answer the same dress code.

The less successful or more divisive outfits were not necessarily unattractive. Their problem, according to critics, was that they engaged less clearly with the evening’s brief: “Tailored for You.” That distinction matters. “Best” and “worst” are subjective labels, so the gallery below evaluates the clothes by theme fidelity, personal specificity, visual resolution and Met Gala impact—not by whether a look conforms to one critic’s taste.

What the 2025 Met Gala theme asked guests to do

The Met Gala took place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2025, opening the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The official dress code, “Tailored for You,” invited guests to explore suiting, accessories, proportion and dandy traditions through their own identities and references.

The exhibition examined Black style and identity through the history and cultural meaning of Black dandyism. It was scheduled to run from May 10 through October 26, 2025. The gala’s co-chairs were Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair.

That context makes a conventional “best-dressed” ranking too narrow. The most compelling outfits did not all look alike. Some were restrained, some theatrical, some historically referential and some deliberately unconventional. What connected them was an identifiable idea behind the tailoring.

The best Met Gala 2025 looks

Ayo Edebiri in Ferragamo: the clearest “Tailored for You” story

Ayo Edebiri’s Ferragamo look made the theme feel personal without becoming literal costume. Vogue reported that the outfit drew on her father’s dandy style. Its leather coat featured elongated, tail-like sleeves, translating that family reference into a sharp contemporary silhouette.

This is the kind of interpretation the dress code seemed designed to encourage. The look had tailoring, but the tailoring was not generic menswear borrowed for the occasion. Its strongest idea came from Edebiri’s own history. The elongated sleeves also gave the outfit a distinctive shape in photographs, satisfying both the personal and visual sides of the brief.

Zendaya in Louis Vuitton: controlled, graphic and camera-ready

Zendaya’s white Louis Vuitton tailoring was the evening’s polished counterpoint to its more flamboyant entrances. The broad-brimmed hat, monochrome palette and clean suiting silhouette created a deliberately controlled image.

There was no need for a complicated color story or an oversized train. The look’s impact came from proportion, repetition and restraint. It also demonstrated that “Tailored for You” did not require guests to perform maximalism: a precise suit and a strong accessory could carry an entire red-carpet frame.

Rihanna in custom Marc Jacobs: tailoring adapted to the wearer

Rihanna arrived in custom Marc Jacobs, combining a cropped sharply tailored jacket with a polka-dot skirt and hat. Her pregnancy reveal became part of the entrance, but it should not be allowed to eclipse the clothing itself.

The outfit worked because the tailoring was adapted to Rihanna’s body, circumstances and established ability to create a Met Gala moment. The cropped jacket supplied structure; the skirt and dots introduced a playful contrast; and the hat completed the look’s specific visual vocabulary. It was not simply a pregnancy announcement dressed up for the carpet. It was a carefully constructed entrance in which personal circumstance and celebrity image were integrated into the design.

Diana Ross in Ugo Mozie: spectacle with a biographical center

Diana Ross made one of the night’s most memorable late-carpet entrances in a custom Ugo Mozie design with an approximately 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren.

The scale was unmistakably Met Gala, but the spectacle had a reason for being there. The train turned family and legacy into the garment’s central message. That biographical anchor kept the look from reading as spectacle for its own sake. Ross’s appearance is one of the strongest choices for an opening or closing gallery image because the silhouette communicates immediately, while the embroidery rewards a closer look.

Colman Domingo in Valentino: theatrical formalwear with a clear vocabulary

Co-chair Colman Domingo wore a custom Valentino look designed by Alessandro Michele. It was among the evening’s most theatrical examples of formal tailoring, using suiting, color and cape-like drama to connect red-carpet spectacle with the dandy vocabulary of the exhibition.

Domingo’s look succeeded by committing to its theatricality. It did not treat formalwear as a neutral black-tie requirement; it used formal dress as performance. The result felt proportionate to both the gala’s scale and Domingo’s role as co-chair.

Lewis Hamilton in Wales Bonner: the case for restraint

Lewis Hamilton wore a custom cream-colored Wales Bonner suit. The restrained palette and precise tailoring offered a quieter reading of the theme, but quiet did not mean disconnected.

Wales Bonner’s work has a direct relationship to contemporary Black diasporic style and menswear, giving the suit cultural context beyond its color and cut. Hamilton’s appearance is useful evidence that the night did not demand flamboyant accessories or exaggerated volume. Cut, proportion and the designer’s perspective could do the work.

A$AP Rocky in AWGE: turning a familiar garment into red-carpet tailoring

A$AP Rocky wore a look from his AWGE creative agency, developed with stylist Matthew Henson. Vogue reported that the double-breasted technical-wool jacket was inspired by Marmot jackets Rocky associated with Harlem.

That reference gave the outfit a useful tension: a familiar, functional garment was transformed through fabrication, proportion and styling into luxury red-carpet tailoring. It also connected the look to a specific place and memory rather than treating “dandy” as an abstract collection of hats, lapels and jewelry.

Doechii in Louis Vuitton: an abbreviated interpretation of suiting

Doechii’s Louis Vuitton shorts suit showed that tailoring did not have to mean a conventional full-length suit. The abbreviated proportions and visible legs created a performance-oriented interpretation while preserving the structured logic of a suit.

The look expanded the night’s tailoring vocabulary. It treated shorts, rather than trousers, as the foundation of a formal fashion statement. That departure was effective because the outfit still read as designed and tailored, not simply as a short dress or an unrelated party look.

Teyana Taylor in Ruth E. Carter: historical and cinematic energy

Teyana Taylor’s red look, created with costume designer Ruth E. Carter, was one of the evening’s most visibly theatrical interpretations. Coverage connected the styling to Black fashion history and performance traditions.

Taylor’s appearance belongs in a gallery section about historical and cinematic references. Its value was not just color or drama; it brought the language of costume and performance into a fashion event built around the cultural history of Black style.

Pharrell Williams: a co-chair to watch in the theme conversation

Pharrell Williams was one of the evening’s co-chairs, alongside Domingo, Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and Anna Wintour. As a co-chair, his appearance formed part of the event’s visual argument about contemporary Black style, tailoring and creative direction. A photo gallery should include the co-chairs together where possible, while keeping the editorial focus on the specific details visible in each available image rather than assigning unsupported design claims.

The most criticized, divisive or least on-theme looks

These outfits should not be presented as personal failures. The more useful question is why some critics found them less successful against the evening’s brief. In several cases, the issue was not beauty, expense or craftsmanship; it was whether the look communicated tailoring, dandyism or a personal point of view clearly enough.

Kim Kardashian in Chrome Hearts: a reference that did not fully resolve

Kim Kardashian wore a black, alligator-textured Chrome Hearts look with a cocked fedora. The Washington Post identified it as one of the evening’s missteps, while other coverage treated the interpretation of dandyism as divisive.

The criticism was not that the outfit lacked luxury or a tailored component. Rather, the texture, hat and styling risked reading as shorthand for a dandy character instead of a fully developed interpretation of Black dandy style. Other viewers saw the look as a plausible reference, which is why “most divisive” is fairer than declaring it objectively the worst.

Lorde in silver: polished, but difficult to connect to the brief

Lorde’s slinky silver ensemble was listed among the evening’s weaker looks by Glam. The criticism focused on its limited engagement with a tailoring-centered prompt.

This is an important distinction for the gallery: a polished outfit can still feel disconnected from a specific Met Gala theme. The silver look may be recognizable and attractive on its own terms, but it offered less visible evidence of the tailoring, dandy or personal-history ideas that made the night’s strongest looks persuasive.

Sydney Sweeney in Miu Miu: conventional glamour versus thematic ambition

Sydney Sweeney wore a black sparkling Miu Miu gown. Mid-Day described the gown as attractive but insufficiently theatrical and insufficiently connected to the theme.

The problem, in this reading, was not conventional beauty. It was that a sparkling gown made a less specific argument than the evening’s suits, shorts suits, coats and historically informed looks. This is a case where “least on-theme” is more accurate than “badly dressed.”

Amelia Gray’s controversial headwear: why cultural context matters

The Washington Post singled out model Amelia Gray’s headwear as a cultural misstep, describing it as appearing to reference a tulle do-rag.

This criticism concerns cultural symbolism and representation, not merely whether the accessory was attractive. It should therefore be handled precisely and neutrally in a photo gallery. The point is not to turn the accessory into a joke, but to acknowledge that references associated with Black style carry cultural meaning and cannot be evaluated only as abstract styling details.

Kamala Harris in Off-White: an awkwardly cohesive whole

The Washington Post identified Kamala Harris’s black-and-white Off-White dress as an awkward look. The criticism centered on the ensemble’s lack of cohesion and its limited engagement with the tailoring brief.

That assessment can remain fashion-focused. There is no basis here to infer political meaning from the outfit. The relevant question is simply whether the dress and styling created a unified visual response to “Tailored for You,” and some critics felt they did not.

Why the “worst dressed” list is less settled

There was considerably more agreement about the evening’s successful looks than about its weakest ones. Vogue, British Vogue, GQ, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair and other coverage repeatedly highlighted the co-chairs and guests such as Ayo Edebiri, Zendaya, Rihanna, Diana Ross and Doechii.

Individual criticism was less consistent. Kim Kardashian’s Chrome Hearts look was a misfire to some observers and a defensible dandy reference to others. Doja Cat’s Marc Jacobs look and several deliberately unconventional ensembles also divided opinion. A responsible gallery should therefore use labels such as “most criticized,” “most divisive” and “least on-theme” rather than presenting a subjective verdict as settled fact.

A useful way to read the red carpet

  1. Theme fidelity: Look for an actual engagement with tailoring, dandyism, Black style or the “Tailored for You” prompt.
  2. Personal specificity: Ask whether the clothing communicates something about the wearer’s identity, family, history or creative world.
  3. Visual resolution: Consider whether silhouette, proportion, materials, hat, jewelry and other accessories work together in the available photographs.
  4. Met Gala impact: Finally, ask whether the look is memorable and distinctive enough for an event built around fashion spectacle.

This framework explains why Hamilton’s restrained cream suit can stand beside Ross’s enormous embroidered train, and why a beautiful gown might rank below a more unusual suit. The question is not which outfit is loudest. It is which outfit makes the most complete argument.

How to build a 2025 Met Gala photo gallery

For a documentary-minded presentation, sequence the images as an argument rather than an uncaptioned celebrity roll call:

  1. Open with visual impact: Rihanna, Zendaya or Diana Ross immediately establish the event’s range.
  2. Explain the theme through the co-chairs: Use Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo and Pharrell Williams to introduce different approaches to tailoring and contemporary Black style.
  3. Move to personal storytelling: Pair Ayo Edebiri’s family reference with Diana Ross’s embroidered tribute to her descendants.
  4. Show tailoring’s variations: Include Doechii’s shorts suit, Teyana Taylor’s theatrical red look and Zendaya’s controlled monochrome tailoring.
  5. Present disagreement carefully: Place Kim Kardashian, Lorde, Sydney Sweeney and Amelia Gray in a section labeled “divisive or least on-theme,” using neutral captions that explain the criticism.
  6. Close with scale: Ross, Rihanna or Domingo can provide a final image that leaves the reader with the gala’s mix of biography, spectacle and design.

Use full-length red-carpet frames to establish silhouette, then close-ups of hats, embroidery, fabrics and accessories to explain why a look worked—or why its details became controversial. Vogue’s complete gallery and Vanity Fair’s full red-carpet gallery are useful editorial references for identifying attendees and planning image order. They do not, by themselves, grant permission to republish the photographs.

Image-rights note: Check licensing, image rights and caption requirements separately before publishing any red-carpet photograph. The existence of a gallery is not permission to reproduce it.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 Met Gala’s most successful looks did more than satisfy a tailoring prompt: they gave tailoring a reason to exist. Edebiri connected it to family, Ross to legacy, Hamilton to cultural context, Rocky to Harlem, and Domingo to theatrical performance. The more criticized outfits generally offered a less complete answer—not necessarily less beautiful clothing, but less evidence of why that clothing belonged at this particular Met Gala.
