In interviews, he explained how each track marks a different point in that journey—and why the EP’s title challenges the glossy picture he felt others had of his life.
What does Dark Side of the Rainbow mean?
Mergui said the title contrasts the painful experiences behind the music with the bright, uncomplicated image he felt people assumed. “Every struggle made me who I am today and that’s why I named the EP, Dark Side of the Rainbow. I felt like it’s time for me to show the dark side of the last 3 years of my life, which everyone always assumed was a rainbow,” he told Notion in October 2022.
He described the EP as a way to show more of his own experience, rather than maintain a public-facing version of events. The project took almost three years, he said, and drew on songs and visuals from that period. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he emphasized that the underlying story was not simply a breakup: “It was always about me finding myself more than just telling about my relationship with one person or my relationship with the media or my relationship with many third parties.”
How the five songs tell the story
Mergui described the track sequence as a movement from the beginning of a relationship through doubt and separation, toward a new chapter. These are his explanations of the songs, not a required interpretation for listeners.

“Somebody’s Fool”: falling in
The opening track represents the start of the relationship. Mergui talked about how love and heartbreak can feel close together, and compared letting down his guard to “Skydiving, no parachute.”
“Lie Like This”: a relationship breaking down
Mergui used a damaged car as a metaphor for a relationship. Some parts, he said, can be fixed; losing love is more like a damaged engine. He also connected the song to showing difficult parts of himself publicly instead of following advice about how to present himself to the media.

“Sucks to Know You (FU)”: the release afterward
Written last, the song reflects the period after the relationship. Mergui said he tried to compress conflicting feelings into it, imagining what he might say if he encountered his former partner after time apart. In an interview with 1883 Magazine, he also described writing the song as a way to put the past behind him and open a new chapter.
Why did Mergui select only five songs?
Mergui said he and his collaborators wrote far more material than the EP could hold, then chose the tracks that best carried its story. He told Notion they wrote “around 50 songs” before selecting five. In a later interview, Wonderland reported his estimate as “around 50-60 songs.” Both are approximate recollections from the artist, not precise audited counts.
