Dolly Thakore’s account of her early broadcasting career describes two identities taking shape in London: a performer who moved from BBC radio work to television, and “Kavita Mehta,” the name she chose for Hindi broadcasts. The story comes from her memoir, Regrets, None, written with Arghya Lahiri, and is presented here as Thakore’s recollection rather than an independently verified production history.
From London meeting to BBC editorial work
In an excerpt from Regrets, None, Thakore recalls that within a week of meeting David Stride in London, she joined the BBC as an editorial assistant in its Overseas Information Service. Her duties included helping edit the Overseas Press Bulletin and London Calling.
The BBC World Service Hindi section later invited her to report on subjects of special interest to women in India and Pakistan. Thakore describes this assignment as the point at which she found herself broadcasting, drawing on experience in debate, elocution and theatre.
Her early television appearances
Thakore identifies Look, Listen and Speak and Make Yourself at Home as her first television appearances. Presented by Mahendra Kaul and Ashok Rampal, the BBC programmes were aimed at Indian and Pakistani immigrants in the UK and covered practical aspects of life in Britain.

She also recalls playing a nine-year-old Indian girl in roughly 104 episodes of English-By-Radio, a BBC guide for people new to English. The episode count is the figure in her memoir account, not an independently confirmed production record.
How “Kavita Mehta” became her on-air name
Alongside her BBC work, Thakore says the Central Office of Information asked her to translate scripts into Hindi after the British Information Services in Delhi referred her. She worked with Farrukh Dhondy and recorded the London Newsletter. According to her account, translating their first eight-minute script took eighteen hours.

When a sound engineer asked her to announce her name, she said “Dolly Rawson.” She recalls that he asked her to sound “more … um … Indian.” Thakore chose “Kavita” after her friend Kavita Rohatgi and selected “Mehta” as a non-committal surname. She says she became Kavita Mehta on air.
A voice recognized years later
Thakore recounts that years later, while she was at All India Radio in Bombay, a visitor recognized her voice as Kavita Mehta. She says the visitor was the Station Director of Radio Mauritius, who had listened to her weekly London broadcasts. It is a memoir anecdote that captures how the name continued to be associated with her voice beyond the original broadcasts.
