The 90-percentage-point difference describes the gap between Rotten Tomatoes’ two displayed measures. It does not show that critics and audience members assessed the film in equivalent ways or that the two groups represent comparable samples. Rotten Tomatoes’ 9% Tomatometer means that 9% of the 64 counted critic reviews were classified as positive by the site. It is not an average rating of 9 out of 100, and it does not mean every critic disliked the film. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus reads: “Presented with great pomp and circumstance but little insight, this documentary purports to be an up-close view of the First Lady while curiously revealing very little about her.” That is the site’s consensus, not a quotation attributed to an individual reviewer.
What does the 99% Popcornmeter mean?
The 99% Popcornmeter is Rotten Tomatoes’ audience measure, shown here from more than 2,500 verified ratings. The label distinguishes these ratings from the critics’ reviews; it does not establish that the audience sample represents all viewers or that every person who watched the film approved of it.

In a February 9, 2026 report, Variety said the film then had a 7% critics score and a 99% audience score. The report quoted Rotten Tomatoes parent company Versant saying, “There has been no bot manipulation on the audience reviews for the ‘Melania’ documentary.” Versant also said reviews displayed on the Popcornmeter are verified by confirming that users bought a ticket. That statement is the company’s response as reported by Variety, not independent proof that the ratings represent every audience member.

Melania follows Melania Trump during the 20 days before the 2025 presidential inauguration. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as a documentary/biography, directed by Brett Ratner, with a runtime of 1 hour 44 minutes. The site lists a theatrical release date of January 30, 2026, and a streaming release date of March 9, 2026.

Amazon says the film is available on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Its film page reports a worldwide theatrical gross above $16.6 million. Amazon’s page has displayed a 98% audience score, while Rotten Tomatoes’ title page showed 99% when accessed October 8, 2026; the figures reflect different source snapshots, so the Rotten Tomatoes score above is tied to that access date.

The scores measure reactions on Rotten Tomatoes, not ticket sales or production economics. Separately, the Associated Press reported on February 1, 2026, that Melania opened to an estimated $7 million in ticket sales. AP also reported that Amazon MGM Studios paid $40 million for the rights and spent about $35 million on marketing. Those are figures attributed to AP’s dated report, not amounts calculated from Rotten Tomatoes.
