Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, announced in January 2025 that her rescued beagle, Guy, had died. In her tribute, she described years of companionship and grief; viewers later saw him in footage filmed for Netflix’s With Love, Meghan before his death, followed by a closing memorial.
What happened to Meghan Markle’s dog Guy?
Meghan announced Guy’s death in an Instagram post reported by Sky News and ABC News on January 8, 2025. That is the date the announcement was reported, not an established date of death. The reports do not establish Guy’s cause of death either.
Who was Guy?
Guy was a beagle Meghan said she adopted in 2015 after he had been at a Kentucky “kill shelter” and was given only days to live. Sky News reported that she adopted him from a rescue centre in Canada. BET identifies A Dog’s Dream Rescue in Ontario and Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Kentucky; those specific organizations are not independently confirmed by the other reports cited here.
In her tribute, Meghan said Guy stayed with her through filming Suits, her engagement and marriage, and becoming a mother. She also recounted a serious accident before her 2017 move to the UK and said he underwent operations over several months.

What did Meghan say in her tribute to Guy?
Meghan’s words conveyed the depth of her grief and the importance of their years together. Sky News quoted her writing, “I have cried too many tears to count.” ABC News reported her closing praise: “And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for.”
Why was Guy in With Love, Meghan?
Guy appears in the lifestyle series because the footage was recorded before his death, Sky News reported. He features in several episodes, and the series ends with a tribute to him. His presence is therefore part of footage made while he was alive, rather than a later appearance created after his death.
