Comics draw on the medieval world in three different ways: they retell legends such as Robin Hood, adapt Arthurian myth for fantasy, or depict documented people and events. The examples that can be verified here show how varied those approaches are, but they do not establish a reliable roster of ten distinct characters. Rather than invent six entries, this guide focuses on the confirmed works and explains what kind of medieval material each uses.
Three ways comics use medieval material
- Legend retellings: stories such as Robin Hood’s are inherited traditions, not straightforward records of historical events.
- Arthurian adaptations: comics reuse figures and motifs associated with King Arthur, often in fantasy plots rather than realistic accounts of the Middle Ages.
- Graphic history: works in this category depict actual people, battles, or political events. Their historical subject matter differs from mythic or legendary storytelling.
Confirmed comic examples
Nottingham: Robin Hood through the Sheriff’s eyes
Nottingham Vol. 1: Death and Taxes retells the Robin Hood legend from the Sheriff of Nottingham’s perspective. Simon & Schuster identifies the volume as a trade paperback published by Mad Cave Studios: Simon & Schuster’s official book page. Mad Cave describes the series as a crime-noir reinterpretation in which the Sheriff investigates and Hood is a violent antagonist: Mad Cave Studios’ series page. That reversal complicates the familiar hero-and-villain roles, specifically in this version of the legend; it is not a claim about every Robin Hood comic.
Knight of Darkness: a hero in an Arthurian fantasy
In Knight of Darkness #1, Varian is the central hero: the son of Narishka and Lancelot, mistrusted by fellow knights, and sent by Merlin to investigate the killing of Grail Knights. The author’s official page describes the comic as a dark spin on Arthurian myth and gives December 3, 2007, as its original publication date: the author’s page for Knight of Darkness #1. This is a fantasy adaptation featuring Arthurian figures, not a historical account.
Once & Future: an Arthurian threat in the present
BOOM! Studios describes Once & Future as a contemporary story in which nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead. Retired monster hunter Bridgette McGuire and her grandson Duncan are drawn into the conflict. The publisher’s overview does not identify the revived villain, so this description does not assign the character a name: BOOM! Studios’ series page.

Knights of Pendragon: the Green Knight as protector
Marvel’s omnibus description presents the Green Knight as the protector and embodiment of Britain since the days of King Arthur, then introduces a newer team facing an arcane threat. This is an Arthurian and mythic protector role, not evidence about a person or institution in the historical Middle Ages: Marvel’s Knights of Pendragon omnibus page.
Historical medieval stories in graphic form
Graphic Medieval History: Knights is a useful contrast to the myth-based comics above. Hachette UK describes it as three stories about English longbowmen at Agincourt in 1415, the siege of Orléans in 1428 and Joan of Arc, and the dynastic conflict ending at Bosworth in 1485. These are publisher-listed historical settings, not fantasy plots centered on invented Arthurian adventures: Hachette UK’s page for Graphic Medieval History: Knights.

Why this is not a verified list of ten characters
The confirmed descriptions support a handful of distinct works and roles, not ten individually sourced character entries. They also do not make all the same kind of claim: Robin Hood belongs to legend, the Green Knight and Arthurian figures belong to mythic adaptations, and the episodes in Graphic Medieval History: Knights are presented as history. Treating those categories as interchangeable—or filling out a ten-item list with unsupported names—would give readers a misleading impression of what the cited material establishes.
