Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—the MediaMTX software itself is free to use under the MIT License. But that does not make a continuous YouTube stream cost-free: you still need a machine or hosted server, a reliable network connection, and the time to keep the setup running. MediaMTX can forward a stream to YouTube using your stream URL and key, but neither uninterrupted operation nor YouTube account eligibility is guaranteed by the software.
What “free” means for MediaMTX
The MediaMTX documentation says that all code in its main repository is released under the MIT License. That means there is no license purchase price for the main software. Compiled binaries also include third-party dependencies; their licenses are listed on the project’s license page. Read the MediaMTX license information.
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy. Its documented capabilities include publishing, reading, proxying, recording, playback, protocol conversion, and stream forwarding. The software can therefore provide the forwarding part of a YouTube workflow, but it does not supply the computer, server, internet connection, or source video. See the official introduction.
What you need to stream continuously
- A host: a computer you already own that can stay powered on, or an optional rented server. MediaMTX documents both a standalone binary and Docker deployment; Docker is described as recommended for production environments, not required for every setup. See the installation guide.
- A stable network connection: an internet connection capable of sustaining the stream and serving its intended audience. MediaMTX gives no universal minimum bandwidth figure in the cited guidance.
- A source with audio and video: MediaMTX’s YouTube guide warns that YouTube requires both tracks and silently rejects video-only streams. See the YouTube publishing guide.
- Operational attention: someone must handle outages, restarts, updates, and any host or network failures. The documentation describes the software and deployment options; it does not promise uninterrupted uptime.
If you already have a suitable always-on machine and internet connection, the incremental software cost can be zero. If not, hosting and connectivity are separate costs to evaluate. The available documentation does not establish a particular host, plan, or price.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How MediaMTX forwards a stream to YouTube
- Install MediaMTX using the standalone binary or Docker, following the official installation guide. Choose a host that can remain powered and connected for the period you intend to stream.
- Get the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key through YouTube Studio’s live-stream workflow. Keep the key private. MediaMTX’s documentation shows configuring a destination URL and key, but it says to check YouTube Studio for the current ingest URL because the example address may be out of date.
- Configure the forwarding destination in MediaMTX with the URL and key from YouTube. The guide recommends using
rtmps://rather thanrtmp://for encrypted transport. Follow the current configuration example in the MediaMTX YouTube guide. - Publish a source containing both audio and video, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the stream is being received. A video-only source is not sufficient according to MediaMTX’s guide.
- Monitor the host, connection, and stream during operation. For forwarding without re-encoding, MediaMTX says bottlenecks are almost always related to limited bandwidth between the server and readers. The required capacity depends on the stream and audience; the documentation does not state a single minimum.
This setup explains how to forward a stream; it does not establish YouTube’s current account eligibility, duration limits, scheduling rules, or uptime conditions. Check YouTube Studio and current YouTube guidance for requirements that apply to your channel.
Choosing between a computer you own and a hosted server
| Question | Existing computer | Rented host |
|---|---|---|
| When it may fit | You already have a suitable machine and can leave it powered on and connected. | You do not have suitable equipment or connectivity at home and are willing to manage a hosted environment. |
| What to assess | Power reliability, network stability, and available capacity for the expected audience. | Network capacity, server availability, deployment comfort, and the provider’s separately verified terms and price. |
| Deployment choices documented by MediaMTX | Standalone binary or Docker. | Standalone binary or Docker; Docker is recommended in the documentation for production environments. |
| Cost established by MediaMTX’s documentation | Software license: no purchase price for the MIT-licensed main repository; electricity and internet costs are not specified. | Software license: no purchase price for the MIT-licensed main repository; hosting prices are not specified. |
Neither option is ranked by MediaMTX as universally better. The practical choice depends on what equipment and connectivity you already have, whether it can remain available, your expected audience, and your comfort maintaining a binary or Docker deployment.
